Hot soundtrack! Transformers: Dark of the Moon

On 13 June the hotly anticipated soundtrack to Transformers: Dark of the Moon will be released, and as expected, it's a hard rock release.
The Transformers: Dark of the Moon album features music from Linkin Park, including the first single Iridescent,, My Chemical Romance, Taking Back Sunday, Art of Dying, Theory Of A Deadman, Black Veil Brides, Skillet, and Mastodon (who contribute a cover of ZZ Top’s Just Got Paid), as well as new music from Paramore and Goo Goo Dolls debuting exclusively on the album.
Contributing the song Iridescent (which also appears on Linkin Park’s 2010 album A Thousand Suns) to Transformers: Dark of the Moon is Linkin Park’s third time working with Transformers director Michael Bay. The first Transformers film featured the band’s smash hit single What I’ve Done, which rocketed to No. 1 on both Billboard’s Mainstream Rock and Modern Rock charts, while the second film featured the specially written New Divide, which topped the Rock, Modern, and Mainstream radio charts simultaneously.
Fueled By Ramen recording artists Paramore will also be releasing Monster, debuting exclusively on the album and marking Paramore's first new single since The Only Exception off their acclaimed third album brand new eyes. "We're back for the attack! And we are so excited to be a part of the Transformers album," says frontwoman Hayley Williams, "Tell your friends... Paramore is still a band."
John Rzeznik from Goo Goo Dolls adds: “It's always awesome to be part of a project of this scale.” Their TF3 exclusive debut track, “All That You Are,” is also their first new music since the release of their current Warner Bros. Records album, Something For The Rest Of Us. Goo Goo Dolls have been touring the world non-stop for the past several months and will perform “All That You Are” live on Good Morning America on July 22nd. Go to www.googoodolls.com for further info.

Another scoop for Prime Circle

HOT HOT HOT NEWS! Local rockers Prime Circle, who recently won the SAMA for Best Rock Album, has yet amassed yet another honour – the band will be sharing the stage with Billboard chart topping act, 3 Doors Down as part of their European tour.
The band is currently on tour in Europe where their enigmatic stage performances led to them being invited to perform with the American rock band. Prime Circle will be carrying the flag for South African rock bands and performing with the US rockers in Berlin, Hamburg and Stuttgart on the 7th, 8th and 10th of June.
Ross Learmonth, lead singer of Prime Circle said, “It’s been a great year for the band; first the SAMA win and now the chance to share the stage with an international rock band of this calibre. We respect this band’s music immensely – we are honoured.” Both bands will be joined on stage by Alter Bridge, the American rock band responsible for the hit album, One Day Remains. So, these gigs have turned out to be a double honour for Prime Circle and our local rockers seem to be enjoying their time in Europe immensely.

Robin Levetan goes solo

Cape Town singer-songwriter Robin Levetan, founder member of Bright Blue, has released his first solo CD of original songs. The album will launch with a live performance at Marimba in Cape Town on Thursday 16 June at 18h00. Talented and accomplished in several fields, Levetan’s passion for music has been life-long. His play “Skyf” was performed at both The Market and Baxter Theatres. As vocalist and founding member of celebrated South African crossover band Bright Blue, he made a substantial writing contribution to the songs on their debut album before leaving the band to pursue other interests. Over one thousand fans were present for the band’s reunion at the End Conscription Campaign’s 25th anniversary celebration in October 2009. The live collaboration inspired an intensive bout of song-writing and recording which gave birth to the beautifully crafted new album titled A Far Country. Levetan co-produced A Far Country with Roger Bashew, drawing on the versatile instrumental and vocal talents of Willem Möller, Paul Tizzard, Selwyn Schneider, Tonia Selley and Buddy Wells. Ex-Bright Blue comrades Ian Cohen, Tom Fox and Dan Heymann, and Freshly Ground keyboardist Seredeal “Shaggy” Scheepers also appeared as a guest on the album which was mixed by Keith Farquharson and mastered in New York by internationally-renowned engineer Chris Athens. The CD can be previewed and purchased online at www.robinlevetan.com or www.rhythmmusicstore.com. The launch will kick off with a short set of songs written and performed by Tonia Selley.

UPDATE: Sean Kingston

Hip-hop star Sean Kingston is still in critical condition, but stabilized, after a jet skiing accident Sunday in Miami Beach. According to gossipcop.com Sean crashed his craft into a bridge connecting Palm Island to the MacArthur Causeway. Although a rep for the hip-hop star has yet to confirm the extent of his injuries, the singer was reportedly throwing up blood, yet responsive when other jet-skiers noticed him in the water and lent assistance. The singer’s rep noted later that “Sean Kingston is now stabilized and has moved from the trauma unit to ICU. Sean’s family thanks everyone for their prayers and support during this time.” The cause of the crash is under investigation.

Viva Teargas!

Teargas
Local hip-hop group Teargas has been nominated for the Best International Act – African – in the Black Entertainment Television (BET) awards, alongside heavyweights Fally Ipupa (Congo), 2Face (Nigeria), D’Banj (Nigeria), Angelique Kidjo (Benin) and D-Black (Ghana). Standing tall, this South African threesome continues to keep their country’s hopes for good music alive. The nomination comes on the back of two SAMA nominations for Best Urban DVD and Best Music Video for 2011. The band are also currently on a nation-wide tour with Liquideep and HHP and there is no doubt that their presence in Urban music scene will be long-lived. The BET awards are scheduled to happen in Los Angeles on June 26 and will be hosted by American actor and comedian Kevin Hart.

Izak se nuwe rol

Izak in Survivor SA Santa Carolina

Winter Warmers - New CD Releases

Lenny Kravitz - Black and White America
As we hit the winter in South Africa, The Beat compiled a list of new CDs, out in the next month or so, that will keep the winter blues away, and keep you warm and snugly.

1. Lenny Kravitz - Black and White America
American Woman singer Lenny Kravitz is back with his ninth studio CD, Black and White America. The CD will be preceded with the release of his new single, Stand, which will hit airwaves 6 June. Marking his first release of new material in three years, Black and White America is a rich rock and funk-infused collection filled with Lenny’s signature guitar riffs, compelling melodies and the undeniable anthemic lyricism that has been his trademark over the course of his 20-year career.  In addition to the album, Lenny Kravitz, who most recently appeared in the Oscar nominated film Precious, has announced that he has been cast in the role of Cinna in the much anticipated film adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ worldwide smash hit novel, The Hunger Games.

2. Simphiwe Dana - An Evening with Simphiwe Dana

Simphiwe Dana - Live
Never in the history of South African music industry had a debut artist captured the hearts and minds of those who love and cherish music and the arts in the same way that Simphiwe Dana has done since back in 2004. The release of her debut album, ‘Zandisile’, with its hair-raising and thumping ethno-soulful sounds of ‘Ndiredi’ (the hit single) gave pronouncement to the fact that Simphiwe Dana was indeed born to sing and perform. By the time she released her second album ‘The One Love Movement On Bantu Biko Street’, Simphiwe had begun shaking the political establishment with her uncensored statements and songs and had taken a center stage as a socio-political commentator on the plight of the poor and the dispossessed. Her 3 albums, including her latest offering Kulture Noir, have deservedly scooped-up over 10 awards and 6 nominations locally and abroad and her music is now part of the curriculum at prestigious universities such as Oxford University in England and other academic institutions. Her true artistic excellence, articulately expressed through her song-writing, has opened-up doors to a musical world that only a few world acclaimed South African musicians have managed to keep open, but Simphiwe in such a short space of time managed to do just that. It is with above accomplishment by this artist that Simphiwe Dana staged a one-night-only special concert ‘An Evening with Simphiwe Dana’ with a 27-piece orchestra.  The concert was a refreshing encounter with the most accomplished and finest female talent this country has ever had.  Simphiwe Dana presented her craft in an up close and personal live rendition of her most accomplished repertoire with a big band, accompanied by the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra and the Miagi Youth Orchestra backed by finest musicians and backing vocalists, and guest artists Madosini and Mthwakazi. Besides the opportunity for first rate entertainment, where one can experience the artists in an up close and personal setting, An Evening With Simphiwe Dana the evening was also unique opportunity to meet the artist in her relaxed manner, and it allowed her to take the audience through a personal music journey in a sort of semi autobiographical monologue probed. You will be amazed, very amazed.

3. Various - For Colored Girls (Soundtrack)
Soundtrack to For Colored Girls
For Colored Girls sees an all female line up ranging from newcomers Janelle Monàe, Estelle and Laura Izibor to Grammy Award-nominee Leona Lewis, as well as the legendary Gladys Knight. The soundtrack, which features 13 brand new, unreleased songs, also includes the stand out tracks, “What More Can They Do” by Laura Izibor and “Four Women,” a cover of the Nina Simone original of the same title, which features Nina herself, her daughter Simone, Laura Izibor, and Ledisi. The collection also features music from Estelle, Janelle Monàe, Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, Lalah Hathaway, Zaki Ibrahim, and Anika Noni Rose. This is truly a great collection of songs that will inspire women across the globe.

4. Death Cab for Cutie - Codes and Keys
Death Cab For Cutie - Codes and Keys
By their seventh studio album, many bands are running out of creative steam and original ideas. But in the case of alt rockers Death Cab for Cutie, nothing could be further from the truth. Codes and Keys is singular in the band’s catalog when it comes to sonic exploration and lyrical ambition. If anything, the band has never sounded more excited to experiment with textures, words, sounds and even the process of recording itself. Unlike the studio process for 2008's Grammy-nominated Narrow Stairs – an album the band recorded to tape in real time, with minimal overdubs and studio trickery – Codes and Keys turned into what guitarist/multi-instrumentalist/producer Chris Walla has taken to calling a “construction project.”
The band focused on capturing the best take of their parts – at times separately, at other times in pairs – and built songs by layering these performances (and other musical ideas) on top of each other. “We've deconstructed little pieces of songs before like this,” Walla says. “[But] we've never pulled the thread out of the whole sweater and then made a new sweater out of it. Not like this.”

5. Jacques Viviers - Lewensdroom

Proverb rocks!

So The Beat bumped into local hip-hop star and SA Idols presenter Proverb at the Survivor SA: Maldives finale on Thursday 26 May in Johannesburg. We poked him a bit on the new season of Idols SA starting on M-Net Sunday 5 June. “It’s gonna be awesome” the singer gushed. “People will be blown away.” He also commented on American Idols, which just ended when Scotty McCreery was crowned as winner. “I didn’t think it was the best choice,” he said. “For me the whole show dipped after Casey Abrams got voted out. That music was awesome! Real passion there and really talented.”

Izak Davel - Vreesloos

Ek is nie!." Daarom noem hy sy nuwe CD bloot Vreesloos.

Gaga madness

Lady Gaga in her Judas music video
Lady Gaga is ready to conquer the world with her latest CD, Born This Way (which The Beat reviewed). Billboard.com posted a brilliant track-by-track breakdown of her CD, here. For those who can't open it, read it below (courtesy of billboard.com).

Lady Gaga 'Born This Way': Track-By-Track Review

Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" album is her first as an international superstar -- and in her mind, as queen leader to a needy coven of "little monsters," outsiders who for one reason or another don't fit into the mainstream.

It's a rough position for any millionaire pop star to be in, but Gaga's fans, and the artist herself, don't seem sensitive to the contradiction. And "Born This Way," unlike her more fluffy, see-what-sticks debut "The Fame," bears leftfield marks under its pop costume: Heavy use of religious metaphor and repeated mentions of Jesus by name; a hybrid of throwback Euro dance sounds with sweeping rock goddess melodies, a la Bonnie Tyler and Lita Ford; and queer-friendly self-affirmation anthems that range from celebratory to predatory.

Together, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense. But to maintain her authenticity as a subversive hero, it really couldn't. "Born This Way" is proof that, for better or worse, Gaga is guided by her own compass. Sometimes it leads her to radio-perfect pop hits ("Hair"). Sometimes it goes weird ("Bloody Mary"). But regardless, this is an artist following her bliss - or in Gaga's case, her mission.

Which tracks on "Born This Way" are Gaga's latest musical triumphs? Here's our Twitter-length track-by-track review of each song.

1. "Marry the Night" - The nuptials might be Gothic, but the track is unapologetic disco-powered pop that could have been a production number on "Fame."

2."Born This Way" - You know it, you love it. Gaga's "I Am What I Am" manifesto is the album's first of many freak-power pulpit-bangers.

3. "Government Hooker" - Opera vocalizing, minimal techno bleeps, a JFK reference, and conflicting definitions of self as seductive product.

4. "Judas" - Calm down folks, it's just a bad boy metaphor, not religious commentary. A model unification of Gaga's philosophical heresy and sonic poppery.

5. "Americano" - Gaga channels Judy Garland with maracas. Could be about gay marriage, immigration, or trying to repeat "Alejandro's" chart coup.

6. "Hair" - As in metal? "Glee"-destined 80s power ballad (with a sax solo!) puts the liberation message through a personal style filter.

7. "Scheiße" - Apparently she's speaking gibberish that sounds German but isn't, kind of like this dated take on club techno. But what a chorus.

8. "Bloody Mary" - Trance-y dirge name-checks Jesus and features a monk chorus chanting "Gaga." Plucked strings up the cathedral creep factor.

9. "Bad Kids" - Slacker anthem literally opens with the line "I'm a loser, baby," but the Beck-isms stop there. More Moroder-70s than plucky-90s.

10. "Highway Unicorn (Road to Love)" - As bizarrely epic as the title. Can't help but picture Gaga as Rainbow Brite riding toward Burning Man.

11. "Heavy Metal Lover" - Relatively forgettable leather & lust, apart from line one: "I want your whiskey mouth all over my blonde south."

12. "Electric Chapel" - It's a nice day for a technicolor wedding. A fat guitar riff leads Gaga down the aisle with her "holy fool" following.

13. "You and I" - Hello Middle America! This is a Mutt Lange country ballad that makes no contextual sense but that is definitely not the point.

14. "The Edge of Glory" - Menthol-cooled club anthem sounds a lot like Cher's "Song for the Lonely" meets Tiffany's "I Think We're Alone Now."

CD REVIEW: Lady Gaga - Born This Way (Universal Music)

The reigning Queen of Pop doesn't know when to hold back - and it's a damn good thing! Her latest studio offering, Born This Way sounds like a more grown-up version of her debut CD, The Fame. Where The Fame dealt with themes of being rich and famous, dancing, falling in love, and all that kind of stuff, Born This Way touches on more serious stuff like religion, not being accepted and crushed love affairs. Serious stuff!! With that said, Born This Way is pure dance. Songs that got THE BEAT excited include Government Hooker, Fashion of His Love, Judas and Hair. Interestingly, the song You and I have elements of Queen's mega hit We Will Rock You and Queen guitarist, Brian May, even appears in the song. Born This Way is not a lyrical best offer, but if you enjoy Gaga's music, you'll LOVE this one.
* The CD will be released in SA on Friday 27 May. It was released in America on Monday 23 May.

CD REVIEW: Mckenzie - Poetic Genesis

The beginning of 2011 marked the beginning of Mckenzie’s solo career with the release of his much anticipated CD, Poetic Genesis. Mckenzie’s career as one of the best singer song writers in South Africa is living proof in the new album. Popularly known for singing some of the most famous songs by Rhythmic Elements, the familiarity of his voice welcomes fans to his album. With the help of producer Zakhele Mabena, Poetic Genesis was rehearsed and recorded live using a band called The Originz. The 13 track album consists of Mid tempo songs which are mostly performed in Tswana and Sotho which is his trade mark. The neo – soul album with jazz samples has a nice African touch to it. Fans will surely appreciate his sound.

Queen Gaga

Lady Gaga is ruling the world - that's official. The pop singer, whose real name is Stefani Germanotta, kicked talk show host and media mogul Oprah Winfrey off the #1 spot for this year's Forbes celebrity power list. Lady Gaga, whose new CD Born This Way will be released on Monday 23 May, moved up from last year's #4 spot to claim the top spot. Forbes rated the Paparazzi singer #1, estimating her earnings in the past year as $90 million, but also stating that her 32 million Facebook fans and 10 million Twitter followers helped her. “Lady Gaga beat Oprah this year because of her social media power. She can use Twitter and Facebook to work the “little monsters” into a frenzy that leads to record sales and media attention. She’s the best example of how celebrities will need to manage their careers in the coming years,” Forbes editor Dorothy Pomerantz said. Winfrey, who next week ends “The Oprah Winfrey Show” syndicated TV chat show after 25 years, dropped one place from last year to No. 2 earning an estimated $290 million. Canadian pop star Justin Bieber, 17, was the youngest to make the list and debuted at No. 3, earning $53 million from concerts and sales from his concert movie and documentary “Never Say Never.” Coming in at No. 4 was U2, earning $195 million and Elton John, who earned $100 million.

Taxi Violence - Stripped Down

Taxi Violence by Deborah Rossouw
May will see the release of Taxi Violence’s first unplugged album, or at least, the closest thing to ‘unplugged’ as Taxi Violence will ever get, Long Way From Home. All the tracks on the album are reworked versions of songs from Untie Yourself and The Turn, except for three new tracks. The tracks were re-arranged and stripped-down to fit into a more acoustic, unplugged format.
The Taxi Violence low-down on the album:
Devil 'n Pistol – “We wanted to capture the feel that we got in that video on vinyl. That raw-dodgy-hotel-bar feel, where random musicians pull together and play some songs. This version is arranged in that way, giving it a more organic sound.”
Venus Fly Trap – “This one is so completely different from the original, it’s not even in the same key. This is a song with huge drums, slide guitar and a wicked harmonica played by Lonesome Dave Ferguson. It just keeps rolling on, this one.”
It Must Be (working title) – “One of the new tracks. It was especially written for our acoustic set. Your typical blues song with a Taxi twist. Originally, it was about an unsuccessful gambling binge in Vegas, but George has written new and more thought provoking lyrics for it.”
Waking Up – “An oldie that we've stripped down to the bare minimum.  Only voices, guitar and a cello. That's it.”
Heads or Tails – “This will most probably be the first single from the album. It’s hard to compare this version with the original…it’s got a different melody, different guitar parts, different beat…only the lyrics are the same. So it’s 75% modern, 25% vintage.”
Between The Heavens And The Deep Blue Sea (working title) – “A brand new one written by Jason Ling. He actually plays acoustic guitars on this track. It's also quite a strong single with a cool Robert Plant vibe to it.”
Long Way From Home – “Another brand new one and pinned as the second single. This will probably also be the title track to the album, as we've planned our entire marketing campaign around the main character in the music video. Be on the lookout for Mr Furry Head.”
Untie Yourself – “Completely stripped down to voices, piano and a cello. This song will only be recognisable by the lyrics.  A beautiful vocal-driven piece of music. Ling practiced his piano pieces for about two weeks in the studio. We started calling him The Chinese Tchaikovsky. The running joke is that it's George's ode to "Angels" by Robbie Williams.”
The Turn – “This song was actually turned acoustic by accident ...the pun is intended. We just messed around and it started to take shape into quite a Western movie soundtrack piece. The end is epic.”
Unholy – “Another much-loved oldie that showcases the class of Lonesome Dave Ferguson. This track has a cool country flavour.”
No More No Less – “One of the more difficult ones to record. We had an idea of what we wanted it to sound like, but no idea how we were going to do it. I think it took the longest to finish. Rusti, our producer, helped me add some awesome percussive elements reminiscent to a small orchestra.”

New Depeche Mode!

Ok, we at The Beat are HUGE HUGE fans of the 80s electro/rock band Depeche Mode. And like all other Modies or Devotees (as fans of the band are referred to), we are just super stoked about the group's new remix album, Remixes 2: 81-11, being released on 6 June. The album is the band's second remix collection, following the 2004 Remixes 81–04. It spans the band’s entire career and includes new arrangements by former Depeche Mode members Vince Clarke and Alan Wilder. The band's official website announced two different CD formats of the album, including single and triple-disc versions, as well as Downloads and as a 6 x 12" vinyl LP box-set, to be released on March 22, 2011. The album will be preceded by the single "Personal Jesus 2011", with the leading remix of "Personal Jesus" by the production team Stargate. We are just so super excited! Go team Mode! Ashtray Electric going skin deep

Local rockers Ashtray Electric used their own DNA for the cover of their new CD, Measured in Fall, which will be released in June. The album cover shot features actual DNA strands of the band members. Each band member had the inside of their cheeks swabbed with an ear bud. The epithelial (skin cell) tissue extracted from each member was lysed (breaking down of the cell wall) to expose the entire genetic genome into the lysed material. The DNA was then purified from all other cellular bodies and amplified using PCR technology. Each sample of DNA was then cut using a cocktail of enzymes and run in separate lanes on a Electrophoresis Gell giving rise to the 4 smears witnessed on the image. The broken band in the 5th lane is a simple molecular weight marker.
The band's new album will be launched with a nationwide tour in June/July, kicking off at The Assembly in Harrington Street, Cape Town on Saturday 11 June.
Ashtray Electric has simply been doing their own thing. Winner of MK`s Best Newcomer Award 2009 and voted to have the potential to be SA`s next musical export, Ashtray Electric have been leaving their gutsy footprints at venues and festivals nationwide. Their music is laced with engaging melodies and packed with galloping riffs and attitude. Add to that their signature sleazy-slow motion sexiness and you`ll find this unique package of four musicians that have skilfully made their mark.
Ashtray Electric first unapologetically gallivanted onto the SA Music Scene three years ago. Their debut album “Bonjour” received rave reviews from fans and media alike. Music journalist Atiyyah Khan commented: “Ashtray Electric is in fashion. They most certainly ignite something electric on stage.”
Measured in Falls introduces Ashtray Electric`s new musical progression. It is not merely a collection of songs; it is an album in the full sense of the word. The new tracks are warm, luscious, and extraordinary. The album contains 11 brand new tracks, as well as their popular single “Release” (with Gazelle) as a bonus track. “Release” enjoyed high rotation on 5fm and national campus radio stations and the video reached no 1 on MK.

Sad news

World renowned singer/songwriter Joe ‘Kolie’ Mogotsi is dead. Joe passed away in hospital in the early hours of this morning, following a short illness. He was 87 years old. ‘Kolie’, as he was affectionately known to his colleagues and friends in the music industry, was a prolific composer and lead singer of the globally renowned The Manhattan Brothers.
The Manhattan Brothers, formed in the early 30s, and was one of the most influential groups in the history of South Africa’s music. The Manhattan Brothers consisted of four vocalists: Joe Mogotsi, Rufus Khoza, Ronnie Sehume and Nathan ‘Dambuza’ Mdledle.  The only surviving member of the band, currently based in the UK, Rufus Khoza, said this morning of Mogotsi’s passing “Man, I cannot believe this. So now, I’m the only one left”.
Some of South Africa’s greatest musicians that have performed or recorded with the group over the years include Hugh Masekela, Miriam Makeba, Mackay Davashe, Kippie Moeketsi and Jonas Gwangwa.
“We are saddened by the sudden passing of Uncle Joe, our country has lost one of it’s musical giants and he will be solemnly missed” said Arnold Mabunda of Gallo Music Group, a company that has had a long standing relationship with Joe Mogotsi and The Manhattan Brothers.

Beyoncé is back!

Holy Moly, are we excited! Beyoncé Knowles, or just Beyoncé as she's known to million of music fans around the globe, will release her fourth studio CD, aptly titled 4, on Tuesday 28 June. The album was recorded over a year between the spring of 2010 and the spring of 2011, while Beyoncé took time away from the spotlight. She engaged in what she describes as simple things, including listening to every kind of music she truly enjoys. Her mixed musical gumbo will be displayed on the upcoming album. The title signifies not only the artist’s fourth solo offering and the day of her birth but it is also a personal gift to her fans. For over one year now her fans around the world took to their social media pages urging her to name the album for her special number. The intensely anticipated video for the album’s lead single, “Run The World (Girls),” made its premiere on American Idol tonight. The online debut of the full-length video immediately followed at www.beyonceonline.com. Filmed in Los Angeles and the Mojave Desert over three days in April, the Francis Lawrence-directed video boasts a cast of over 200 dancers, a menagerie of exotic animals and Beyoncé as the leader of a stunning army of women.

Voting of another kind is also feverishly underway this week with the music industry’s much anticipated flagship awards ceremony only a few sleeps away, the rush to vote for the ultimate MTN SAMA 17 Record of the Year is also on. The 17th annual MTN South African Music Awards take place this weekend on the 20th and 21st of May 2011 at Montecasino, leaving little time for music lovers to choose the most Ayoba record of them all.
“The MTN Record of the Year category can only be decided by the public and we call on every music fan to show their passion for local music by voting for their favourite artist whom they think had the biggest record,” says Hazel Chimhandamba, MTN SA Manager: Music & Lifestyle Sponsorships. “We currently have 20 nominations in the category and based on the number of votes per artist, an independent audit firm has been appointed to oversee the shortlisting down to five on Thursday 19 April. So we encourage music fans to ensure that their favourite artists make the shortlist ahead of the Top 5 shortlist deadline on Thursday afternoon at 17:00.”
MTN has just concluded national roadshows to promote the MTN SAMA Record of the Year in Mpumalanga, Limpopo, KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng. The roadshows were supported by performances by some of the MTN SAMA nominees, including Zakes Bantwini, Liquideep and Professor, amongst various other local artists. MTN gave away loads of prizes, including airtime and hampers. A major part of the roadshows was to show how to cast their votes and how to access fantastic MTN SAMA 17 downloads such as songs or wallpapers and stand a chance to win a VIP experience to attend MTN SAMA 17.
“This is the only award where the power rests with the music-loving public of South Africa to decide where the MTN SAMA statuette will go to,” concludes Chimhandamba. It is easy to vote for your favourite artist. Simply SMS the code of your favourite artist to 083 123 7262 to give the award to the most deserving artist according to you:

The sounds of Rocco

Where were you when you heard “My Heart Will Go On” (from ‘Titanic’) for the first time? Can you remember the theme tune from the TV series ‘Murder She Wrote‘? And of course you know “You Raise Me Up”, as sung by Josh Groban – but have you heard it with bagpipes? Did you also cry when you saw the movie ‘Forrest Gump’?
South Africa’s most flamboyant and adventurous pianist has cooked up a fresh brew of fun and nostalgia that few will be able to resist. From the show-stopping belters, to some cheesy retro and a bit of high drama, all of the songs he’s collected are bound to have you recalling emotions, laughs and moments.
“Memory” from ‘Cats’, “Don’t Cry For Me, Argentina” from Evita, “I Dreamed a Dream” from Les Mis - who hasn’t throatily sung these songs in the shower? And why not indulge in the guilty pleasures of an eight-minute ABBA Medley? Then there’s also the chocolate-box luxury of laid-back tunes such as “Ballade for Adeline”, “Sleepy Shores” and “The Music Box Dancer”…
In this brand new show, Rocco plays the songs off his latest CD whilst telling the background stories that moved him to record the tunes. His musical memories stretch right the way back to his boyhood in the good-ol’ Free State, and he intends to take his audience with him on the journey!
Beautiful, beautiful – head to toe and inside out! In a world where we are constantly stressed and fearful, sometimes all we need is beautiful, beautiful piano music!
