Rihanna & Katy Perry going on an 'African safari'

Katy Perry and Rihanna
It seems singer-songwriter Katy Perry and pop star Rihanna have buried their differences and now the two are reportedly planning a holiday to Africa. "Katy and Rihanna have both done the Hawaii and Cabo-type trips to Mexico before, so this time they're thinking something a bit different, like a safari in Africa," thesun.co.uk quoted a source as saying. "They want to go to a place where they can have amazing experiences," added the source. Now we wonder if this so-called safari get-away will hapopen when Rihanna tours South Africa later this year...

Happy Birthday Ella Fitzgerald!

Ella's Google doodle
Today, 25 April, would have been the 96th birthday of jazz legend Ella Fitzgerald.  Known as the "First Lady of Song", "Queen of Jazz", and "Lady Ella", this pioneering American jazz vocalist was known for her purity of tone, impeccable diction, phrasing and intonation, and a "horn-like" improvisational ability, particularly in her scat singing.  Over the course of her 59-year recording career, she sold 40 million copies of her 70-plus albums, won 13 Grammy Awards and was awarded the National Medal of Arts by Ronald Reagan and the Presidential Medal of Freedom by George H. W. Bush. Google celebrated her birthday today with a special doodle. Happy Birthday, Ella!

CD REVIEW! Lil Wayne - I Am Not A Human Being II

Rapper Lil Wayne's 10th studio album, I Am Not A Human Being II, is not quite what we expected. It's safe to say that the CD has the distinction of being the rapper’s most focused album yet, although it seems he didn't put that much effort into the CD.  I Am Not A Human Being II descends into nonsensical party rap — which isn’t bad in and of itself, but it’s the way it’s delivered by Wayne and his comrades (including 2 Chainz, Soulja Boy, and Drake): lethargic, bored, and uninspired. Effort. Just a little. This album has less than little. Lil Wayne is an aficionado of pussy-eating and doing lots of drugs, usually at the same time. That’s all you’ll learn from listening to I Am Not a Human Being Part II. Although there are several standout tracks on the album, it's not as cohesive as his previous work. Each track is vastly different from the next, like snapshots of planets Wayne visited as he soared through outer space during the recording process. Like space travel, it can be disorienting at times.

Dark times for rockers 3 Doors Down

Not the best shot of Todd Harrell of 3 Doors Down
3 Doors Down bassist Todd Harrell has been released from a Nashville jail, reports Digital Spy. Todd was arrested in the city last Friday (19 April 19) on suspicion of driving under the influence and vehicular homicide. Todd posted bail of $100,000 bond following his arrest, says E! Online. The 41-year-old is alleged to have struck and killed Paul Howard Shoulders Jr while driving under the influence of alcohol. Todd was travelling in Tennessee when he is reported to have lost control of his vehicle, striking Shoulders Jr's truck. The victim - who in turn hit a guard rail and rolled over an embankment - was transported to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead. Todd informed authorities that he had been drinking hard cider prior to the crash, and was under the influence of both Lortab and Xanax. The bassist has also been charged with bringing controlled substances into a jail, after he was allegedly discovered to be in possession of Oxycodone, Xanax and Oxymorphone during a search. He is due back in court on tomorrow (Thursday 25 April). The band have since cancelled four gigs, and plan to resume touring on May 31 in Moscow.

Adele swopping recipes with Barbra Streisand

Adele and Barbra Streisand
UK singer Adele is getting cooking tips from non-other than legendary singer, Barbra Streisand. The Sun reports that the two singers became good friends after performing at this year's Academy Awards, where Adele scooped an Oscar for her Skyfall soundtrack. The British star apparently visited Barbra's Los Angeles home for dinner before the awards show and was treated to a meal - and some food advice. "Adele has got heavily into her cooking during her break from music to have her son and Barbra has always been fanatical about what goes into her food," a source told British newspaper The Sun. "They have been swapping notes about meals ever since they met. "Barbra employs a personal chef to supply her with meals that taste delicious but are also healthy. According to the publication, the two stars remain in touch and are always swapping recipe ideas. Barbra has apparently told friends their close friendship could even mean a musical collaboration is on the cards in the near future. With Adele's colossal success and Barbra's knowledge of the industry they would certainly make a dream team. "Adele finds her company very reassuring because she has been through the whole global fame thing and knows exactly what it's like," the insider continued. The British star has had her hands full recently, looking after young son Angelo. She has also been busy landscaping her garden to create a typical seafront scene in her own backyard.

Well done, Daft Punk! Rocking all over the world. . .

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis is a world phenomenon

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis
Rappers & hip-hop crew Macklemore & Ryan Lewis are shooting up the charts with their hit songs Can't Hold Us (featuring Ray Dalton), as well as their catchy anthem Thrift Shop. But it was their equality anthem Same Love, that put them way in front of the rest in their league.“I wrote the song shortly after Obama came out in support of gay marriage. Then Frank Ocean came out. It seemed like time was of the essence. It was never about being the first rapper to publicly support the issue, but at the same time you don't want the song's power to become diluted because all of the sudden it's a bandwagon issue. I knew I wanted to write the song since 2011, I just couldn't figure out the perspective.” We see that best on "Same Love" as he compellingly relates how when he was in the third grade he came to the conclusion he was gay because he could draw, kept his room clean and had an uncle who was in a same-sex relationship. His mother reassured him he was not, but it's still a discussion you won't find many other MCs leading, even in the post-Frank Ocean age. He thinks the song's cultural impact shows how much the notoriously homophobic hip-hop world has changed in recent years. He told HitFix, "I hope we're part of that transformation," Macklemore said. "I don't think a song like 'Same Love' would have been received the same way even five years ago. We as a society and a culture have proven throughout time that we evolve, that we become slowly more compassionate and tolerant and accepting. The last couple hundred years in American culture have shown that. Obviously, there's give and take. There's times when we haven't and times that we lose ourselves, but I do think we're evolving as a society and hip-hop is a reflection of that." Macklemore, you did the gay community proud with the anthem!

Willem Botha to perform at Eurovision 2013

The hunky Willem Botha
It's official – Afrikaans singer Willem Botha is going to perform at the Eurovision Song Contest. I feel very honoured to be invited and be part the team for Belarus. Big names in the music industry such as ABBA won this contest in 1974 and Celine Dion in 1988.

SINGLE REVIEW! Depeche Mode - Soothe My Soul

This should have been the first single from Depeche Mode's 13th CD, Delta Machine. But as Mode fans know, the band has a tendency of releasing singles that aren't actually chart toppers, but things might change with the release of Soothe My Soul as the 2nd single from Delta Machine. The song blends ghostly atmospherics, muted keyboard notes, and surging synths with a hypnotic funky electro beat – almost in a Personal Jesus style. Unlike the schmaltzy balled ‘Heaven’, ‘Soothe My Soul’ is a swaggering, bluesy electro-pop number. This is also one of my favourite tracks on the new CD. Now let’s just hope the band bring their tour to South Africa as well…Have a look at the new video, HERE!

Britney Spears records new song for The Smurfs 2

Britney Spears
The Brit (aka Britney Spears)  is back with funky new song that will appear on the soundtrack for the movie The Smurfs 2. The singer revealed on her Facebook and Twitter page that a song she made for her "boys" titled 'Ooh La La' will feature in the film. She said: "Remember that surprise song I recorded for my boys? It's coming soon! 'Ooh La La' for The Smurfs 2 :) Stay tuned for more... "I have always loved the Smurfs as a kid and now my boys are the biggest Smurfs fans ever. I wanted to surprise them with a song in the movie. I know they'll think it's Smurftastic!" The track was written by producers Dr Luke, Ammo and Cirkut, all of whom worked on the star's Femme Fatale album, as well as Bonnie McKee, J Kash, Lola Blanc and Fransisca Hall, Market Watch reports. It was also recently reported that Britney will collaborate with Wiz Khalifa on her next album.

A case of mistaken identity at the Iron Lady's funeral

Mangosuthu Buthelezi
Ray Charles
The social networks were abuzz yesterday of the attendance of the late blind singer Ray Charles at former Britain prime minister Margaret Thatcher's funeral in Britain. While the Bishop of London, Richard Chartres, gave his sermon, cameras suddenly turned to "a dapper-looking Ray Charles", The Times newspaper reported. When viewers saw this, they took to Twitter. Unfortunately for them, it wasn't Ray Charles , but instead South Africa's Inkatha Freedom Party leader, Mangosuthu Buthelezi! Big oops!!! Seriously, if the world press knew anything of music, they would have known that Ray Charles 'Robinson' died 10 June 2004. Ray, of course, was a pioneer in the soul genre during the 1950s by fusing rhythm and blues. He is also known for helping to racially integrate country and pop music during the 1960s with his crossover music. The influences upon his music were mainly jazz, blues, rhythm and blues and country artists of the day such as Art Tatum, Nat King Cole, Louis Jordan, Charles Brown, Louis Armstrong. His playing reflected influences from country blues, barrelhouse and stride piano styles.

CD REVIEW! Paramore - Paramore

This self-titled release is Paramore's fourth studio release, and the first release without Zac and Josh Farro. The remaining founding members are Hayley Williams and Jeremy Davis. There are 17 tracks on the album and the new self-titled sounds like a band that’s happily hastened with fresh and urgent upbeat pop-rock. Hayley is probably one of the more exceptional female vocalists in modern rock currently, and she has continued to grow as an artist. Her vocal performance on the album is almost flawless. The energy is good throughout the album, and even when the songs go far into the realm of pop it is at least more cerebral pop than you hear on the radio most of the time. The main positive of this album is that it is insanely catchy! As Rolling StoneMagazine said: "Hayley William rocks each new look like an I-will-survive warrior priestess." Amen to that one!

CD REVIEW! Mafikizolo - Reunited

Many have been asking where the renowned and talented Mafikizolo vanished to... Well, rest assured because the once most talked about Afro-pop group is at it again with a new release, Reunited. Not your average duo, the fresh album offers the best in the current music industry and first single off the album, ‘Khona’ which features Uhuru is proof enough that the group is most definitely back with a big BANG! Like they always do, the duo comprising of Theo Kgosinkwe and Nhlanhla Nciza offers up to date sound with charming sing along vocals. Over and above that, the group also goes extra mile in dishing out songs that are meant to reclaim their spot in the music industry. Mafikizolo performs each song from the heart and swings on melodies in a very impressive manner. On this release, the duo does not only give their outmost musical offering, they also welcome people to their music diversity space. Crossing over and giving everyone a reason to listen to their album, Mafikizolo goes and jot ‘Happiness’ – a song with a strong message for any happy soul on planet earth. Other songs to borrow your ears to are, ‘Reunited’, ‘Saka Harabe Bone’, ‘Nxese’, ‘Nakupenda’, ‘Ngenxa KaThixo’ and many more.

Selena Gomez under fire from American Hindu groups for wearing a bindi (SERIOUSLY??)

Selena performing at the MTV Movie Awards
I really don't know what the fuzz is all about from American Hindu leaders who are angry and teen pop singer Selena Gomez for wearing a bindi symbol on her forehead during her performance at Sunday's MTV Movie Awards? WENN reports that American Hindu leaders has called the performance "insensitive".  They say, "The bindi on the forehead is an ancient tradition in Hinduism and has religious significance," Rajan Zed, a spokesman for the Universal Society of Hinduism, said. "It is also sometimes referred to as the third eye and the flame, and it is an auspicious religious and spiritual symbol... It is not meant to be thrown around loosely for seductive effects or as a fashion accessory aiming at mercantile greed. Selena should apologize and then she should get acquainted with the basics of world religions." Though Selena has yet to respond, many of her fans expressed outrage at what they called "cultural appropriation" during the singer's performance "Come & Get It." "My friend who is a Sikh is raging that Selena wore a bindi 'she has no right, it's like she's mocking us, it isn't her religion, we don't go around wearing crosses. It's not our religion. We would most likely get burned to the ground if we did, why is she so special," one person wrote. Seriously, there is more troubles in the world than to worry about a bindi on a teen pop star's forehead. Why make something out of nothing? Just my honest opinion...

Jack Parow, akoesties?
Hoe drink jy deesdae jou brannas? Steeds vier vingers sterk.

Shane Filan
Are you still 'Flying Without Wings' after Irish heartbreakers Westlife has broken up? Don't! Music.news reports that the album will be released towards the end of this year. Shane says 'I am so excited to be joining London Records, Universal Music and being back in the studio in London and Nashville recording new songs has been amazing. One of the things that pleases me the most about this record is that I've been given the opportunity to write my own songs. I'm so excited for people to hear them!' Shane will release his new album on London Records later in 2013.

Justin Bieber's ‘controversial’ Anne Frank comment

Justin Bieber
Seems that these days, wherever Justin Bieber goes, controversy seems to follow the teen pop idol. According to tvguide.com, he was recently in Amsterdam for a performance. While in Amsterdam, he visited the well-known Anne Frank House. Frank, of course, died in a concentration camp in 1945 at age 15 after she and her family were captured by Nazis in Amsterdam. As Justin was truly inspired by his visit, the message he left in the guest had some stunned. The message read: "Truly inspiring to be able to come here. Anne was a great girl. Hopefully she would have been a belieber," Bieber wrote, according to the Anne Frank House's Facebook page — using the term applied to his hordes of (mostly teenage and female) fans". Do you find Bieber's entry offensive? Justin Bieber will be performing live for two stadium shows on Wednesday 8 May at Cape Town Stadium and Sunday 12 May at FNB Stadium Johannesburg.
