REVIEW! Prince - HITNRUN Phase Two

Prince is someone with a lot of tricks up his sleeve. Making surprise appearances and releasing CD's without anybody knowing about it. And the latter counts for HITNRUN Phase Two. Consequenceofsound says the CD was recorded fully in analogue … over a nearly four-year period – gradually adding songs until the sequence was perfected and ready for release. A 16-member horn section is featured throughout the album, combining Prince’s NPG HORNZ and Minneapolis’ HORNHEADS, the latter a frequent addition to his larger studio ensemble. I quite like it. It's funky, groovy and anything what I've expected from the Purple One. My favourite track on this 12-track CD is “Baltimore”, a song he wrote following the much publicized death of Freddie Gray, the Baltimore man who was allegedly killed while in police custody.

REVIEW! Maroon 5 - Singles

I'm a big fan of Maroon 5. I have all their CDs:  Songs About Jane (2002), It Won't Be Soon Before Long (2007), Hands All Over (2010), Overexposed (2012), V (2014), but I don't have singles. I don't want it. I don't like it. Harsh words from someone who is a fan of the band. I think the biggest reason for not liking this CD is the collection of songs and the lack of new, rare, demo and/or exclusive tracks. The CD is bland in comparison to other greatest hits CD' s out there. Sorry Santa, I don't want this in my Christmas stocking this year. Thank you.

REVIEW! Kylie Minogue - Kylie Christmas

Kylie Minogue gets festive with her new album 'Kylie Christmas' and it's just in time for Christmas. The Ozzie singer's CD features 13 tracks – including several duets and a mix of original and classic songs. Kylie has enlisted the help of her sister Dannii Minogue for the deluxe version of the album, recording the brand new song '100 Degrees' – set to be a disco Christmas classic! James Corden features on Yazoo's brilliant 'Only You', Iggy Pop joins Kylie on the Waitresses festive hit, 'Christmas Wrapping' while Frank Sinatra posthumously completes the roll call of collaborators, appearing on 'Santa Claus Is Coming To Town'. Pop this on your Christmas wishing list, you won't be disappointed.

Babyface - Return Of The Tender Lover

The legacy of 11-time Grammy Award®-winning multi-platinum icon Kenny ‘Babyface’ Edmonds continues with the release of the album RETURN OF THE TENDER LOVER. “I have been blessed to experience a lot of love in my life,” commented Babyface.  “It is the greatest gift in life and I feel blessed to share that universal message through my music.” RETURN OF THE TENDER LOVER is the 10th studio album by the poignant tunesmith, prolific hit maker/producer, superstar recording artist, and revolutionary label owner Babyface.  The album is filled with eight beautiful new original tracks of unapologetic R&B, intended to bring feel-good grooves back to music.  Babyface plays on every track on the album including, although not limited to, his amazing and widely-praised guitar work. RETURN OF THE TENDER LOVER’s title commemorates and pays homage to Babyface’s breakthrough album of 1989, the RIAA triple-platinum Tender Lover.  His second studio LP, it spun off a quartet of career-defining solo R&B/pop crossover hits, “It’s No Crime” (#1), “Tender Love” (#1), “Whip Appeal” (#2), and “My Kinda Girl” (#3).

Uit my perspektief! Bobby Van Jaarsveld - Die Eerste 10 Jaar

Bobby het daardie dag my hart gewen. It's Always Been You".

HOT! The Vamps - Wake Up

Wake Up, the highly anticipated follow up to Meet The Vamps. When The Vamps announced their return at the end of September, the pre-order for the Wake Up EP went to #1 in a matter of minutes. Following the track premiering at radio, a Track of the Day on Radio 1, the video launching guest starring Brooklyn Beckham (view here), the single was released and midweek at #1. When their fan-fests went on sale most sold out immediately, and the arena tour in Spring 2016 looks set to do the same. The Vamps  have picked up a phenomenal amount of success since their launch just under 2 years ago. Their debut album Meet The Vamps went multi-Platinum in a huge number of countries across the globe and charted at #2 in the UK. They have sold over 10 million singles across their five releases. Their online stats are equally impressive - Can We Dance has clocked up over 43 million YouTube views, Wild Heart  over 26 million, Last Night  has had over 23 million views, Somebody To You  over 84 million views and Oh Cecilia (Breaking My Heart) picked up 36 million. Their channel has already tipped 225 million total views and signed up over 1.3million subscribers. They frequently trend around the world on Twitter, and their Facebook has over 5.3million likes.

REVIEW! My thoughts on Adele's 25

I took my time reviewing Adele's 25. Literally took my time. Not that I don't like her music, but because I wanted to be sure how to express myself. Despite having that throat surgery in 2011, her voice is still has haunting as ever: brassy and husky, a Titanic voice I would say. Yes the mood on 25 is sombre, as I expected. Besides the track Hello and When We Were Young, I found myself drawn to the song River Lea, a Danger Mouse production which is for me is an almost strutting modern gospel sound track. Just brilliant. And yes, what is Adele without heartache and pain? Almost every song on 25 touches on heartache in some ways. But thank God there are some "upbeat" songs like Sweetest Devotion. Her fruits of sorrow is our joy, our lemon juice, sweet and bitter, yet nice. Unlike 21 & 19, I won’t be sitting moping and crying with a box of tissues next to me, but rather sit on the porch with a glass of good white wine and enjoy the scenery while soaking up the sun. Thank you, Adele

HOT! Van Coke Kartel: Energie music video goes live this Saturday night

VAN COKE KARTEL jump-started the Johannes Kerkorrel & Die Gereformeerde Blues Band’s iconic song, Energie on their cover EP with the same name. Jukebox on kykNET NOU! will premiere this high voltage performance music video on DSTV 146 this Saturday evening, 19th December. Tune in from 19:30. Covering this song is quite personal for Van Coke Kartel. Francois van Coke says that Johannes Kerkorrel and Koos Kombuis’ music was the only Afrikaans music they listened to growing up and the only thing they felt they identified with. Back in the day, Wynand used to be the sound engineer at some of Kerkorrel’s theatre shows. If you are a fan, then hurry up, Van Coke Kartel’s version of Energie can only be found on iTunes and on the vinyl edition available from Permanent Record.

RAMfest North & South Postponed due to Rand Dollar Exchange

Organisers, RAMtouring and Hilltop Live, regrettably announce the postponement of the 2016 events, scheduled to be held in March 2016.  The current Rand currency weakening has impacted the planned 2016 events hard, with the cost of bringing international artists skyrocketing. Carel Hoffman (Hilltop Live): “The really, really strange South African currency situation has forced us to cancel all of the international artists provisionally booked for Ramfest. Unfortunately we have therefore been forced to postpone Ramfest. Sorry about that guys but our hands have been cut off. We have no choice in these crazy times. We will be in touch.”

MUST SEE! Daft Punk - Unchained

You don't have to understand French when watching Daft Punk - Unchained. The music and images speak for themselves. I am a self-confessed Daft Punk fan. Actually a Daft Punk punker. I've followed the band from their humble beginning until where they are now - dominating the world music scene with their unique blend of sounds and music styles. Although it's unsure if we in South Africa will see this brilliant piece of work, the documentary explores the pop culture phenomenon of the mysterious music duo Daft Punk, which pulls back the masks of the Grammy award winning French musicians, who are famed for performing in robot attire that hides their faces. The documentary includes radio interviews, rare footage and exclusive interviews with their close friends and collaborators. The only thing that got to me was there was nothing in it about the people behind the robot masks - Thomas and Guy-Man as actual people. You don't hear them speak directly to the camera, and you hardly find anything out about their personal lives. I think it's a good thing. It keeps the enigma alive. The vibe and cult that is Daft Punk.
