LEGEND! Paul McCartney - Pure McCartney

This is the only comprehensive career collection released of Paul McCartney's solo works (outside of the The Beatles) from his 45 year solo career. The collection was personally curated by Paul McCartney and many tracks have been remastered for this collection. 'Me and my team came up with the idea of putting together a collection of my recordings with nothing else in mind other than having something fun to listen to. Maybe to be enjoyed on a long car journey or an evening at home, or at a party with friends. So we got our heads together and came up with these diverse play lists from various periods of my long and winding career. The word career is a bit misleading because to me it has been more like a musical adventure than a proper job. It pleases me, and often amazes me, that I've been involved in the writing and recording of so many songs, each of them so different from the others. But on my next long car journey this will be the soundtrack for the ride, and a great ride it has been coming up with these songs. So jump in your hot rod or relax in your hot bath and give these ditties a spin and remember that if half of the pleasure we had in putting this collection together communicates itself to you, we ll all be riding high!' - Paul McCartney

HOT CD! Nick Jonas - Last Year Was Complicated

A polished break-up album from one of pop’s leading men, Last Year Was Complicated reflects Nick Jonas’ transition into adulthood. But he's careful not to overstate the album's purpose. It's sexy without being scandalous (“I’ll never get over not getting under you,” he winks on the R&B-leaning “Under You,”) and meditative but not mopey (he toyed with naming the album after the heart breaking ballad "Unhinged" before going with something a little less woeful). And with help from Max Martin (Taylor Swift, The Weeknd), his signature, smart pop sound remains perfectly intact, even if Jonas himself is on the mend. Singer/songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and actor Nick Jonas is best known as one-third of the hugely popular Disney Channel sibling pop/rock act the Jonas Brothers. After 2010, Nick has focused primarily on his own career, releasing solo material, appearing in musicals, and acting in film and television. A performer since the age of seven (the age at which he joined the Broadway cast of Annie Get Your Gun), Nicholas made his songwriting debut in 2002, when a holiday tune he'd co-written with his father found its way onto a Broadway Christmas album. A contract with Columbia Records followed two years later.

MUST LISTEN! Elvis Blue - Optics

Elvis Blue has established himself as one of the most prominent artists of the past 5 years since winning Idols in 2010. Currently riding on the high from his most recent SAMA win, Elvis’s new album Optics is his first English album in 3 years and judging by fans’ initial reaction to the first single “The Tide”, is bound to be another trophy in Elvis’s impressive collection.

HOT CD! Jesse Clegg - Things Unseen

Jesse Clegg recently released his new CD ‘Things Unseen,’ and it's a hot one! It is the first locally recorded album since his first album, ‘When I Wake Up.’ The album was produced by Denholm Harding in Potchefstroom at Light Stain Studios and in Johannesburg at B Sharp Studios; it was mixed by Denholm and Ewald Van Rensburg.

Jesse Clegg started writing the songs whilst in New York in 2013 and finished all the writing back home in South Africa in his own studio in Johannesburg. Jesse explains how the album was recorded, “It was a fantastic and challenging experience, I wanted to move away from guitar as my primary writing instrument and incorporate new elements. Many of the songs were written with piano and electro soundscapes and rhythms. Technology played a big part in the making of the productions, using the studio as a tool to arrange the music around the emotional quality of the songs.”

‘Things Unseen,’ features 10 original tracks, with ‘Use Me’ and ‘Souvenir’ being the first two singles released last year. His latest single, ‘Breathing’ ft. Shekhinah was released on Saturday, 14 May on 947 & KFM’s #CokeTop40SA chart show to an amazing response, which saw the song play listed immediately.

Jesse has a widespread influence in his music, but this album showcases just how multi-talented he is. “I've always been musically curious in my writing and this album explores a diverse range of song styles and genres, there are influences of urban house, contemporary electro, indie rock and folk music,” says Jesse on where exactly his influences came from for this album. According to Jesse Clegg, the album title reflects the personal and introspective themes of the songs.

“Things Unseen are the hidden messages behind what is observable; those moments in life when a truth is revealed to us - either about ourselves or about the world around us. The feeling of being on a great search to find the meaning of love, loss, friendship, alienation, joy and ultimately our place in the world. Those are things unseen, unobservable, only felt.” – Jesse Clegg

Jesse Clegg is Mr Success

‘Breathing’ is the brand new single by singer-songwriter, Jesse Clegg which features talented songstress, Shekhinah.
The latest offering is the latest single off of his upcoming album, ‘Things Unseen,’ set to be released this June. Jesse is fresh off of a massive North American tour, which saw him play 35 shows and drove 17 000 miles.

‘Breathing’ was recorded in Light Stain Studios in Potchefstroom and B Sharp Studios in Johannesburg, and it was produced by SAMA nominated Denholm Harding.

When asked about the concept behind the song, Jesse Clegg had this to say, “I wanted it to feel like an emotional song but still upbeat and full of energy. I wrote ‘Breathing,’ with a female collaborator in mind, and when I heard Shekhinah's music, I knew that she had an amazing voice and a great vibe. It was awesome recording it with her and she brought a lot of emotion to the song. It is about two people who have to help each other to find a way out of a dark situation. A collaboration on the track made sense and she immediately got what the song was about and brought her own unique intensity to it.”

‘Breathing’ by Jesse Clegg ft. Shekhinah is available for download on iTunes. You can see Jesse at Café Roux in Noordhoek on 7 and 8 July.

Locnville's new album 'Taste The Weekend - HOT!

Twin brothers Andrew and Brian Chaplin (Locnville) are making more musical memories, this time on a global scale with their latest body of work, ‘Taste The Weekend’. Inspired by the sounds of future dancehall and indeed the deep house scene of South Africa, Locnville, alongside such passionate SA talent as Hendrik Joerges and Sketchy Bongo, and proven International hit-makers Esjay Jones (Selena Gomez) & Trey Vittetoe (Miley Cyrus & Selena Gomez) and Narinder Singh (Timbaland), have produced an honest, bold coming of age statement – a cinematic, edgy and mostly upbeat affair with hook-filled new material which will drag fans, new and old, on the next leg of their journey which started in 2009 with ‘Sun In My Pocket’. Of ‘Taste The Weekend’ Andrew says ‘this record is the perfect amalgamation of all the sounds that you’ve come to expect from us, with of course a bit of experimentation in there too. We focused on making a uniquely African sound with an international flavor, which I think really comes across in this. It’s been almost a year in the making between South Africa and the States, and I am very proud to put our name to this.’ The lead track on the album, ‘Grapevine’, is a slice of rolling electro-hop that glitches and twists, underneath their signature matter-of-fact rhyming.  This is quickly followed by ‘Better’ the twins musical nod to the progressive hip-hop of Rae Sremmurd & Chance The Rapper, which gives us a glimpse of the brothers’ growth beyond the suburbs of their youth. Second single ‘Cold Shoulder’ co-produced with SA’s Sketchy Bongo bounces its way into your head and goes round and round for days, as a great pop single should.  The title track, which underneath guest vocliast Roxy’s sultry refrain, hides a dark edge evoking the feelings of a Sunday morning come to soon.  The sun comes out for ‘Just Like Me’, which bubbles and scrapes before revealing itself as the self-effacing cousin of ‘Cold Shoulder’. There’s no time for sleep or chilling, as we go back to the club with ‘All For You’, ‘Santa Monica Drive’ and ’25’.  The phased vocals and electro-dub of ‘Golden Trinkets’ closes the loop. Hit repeat. Through musical and social experimentation, this multi-platinum selling, award-winning electronic pop duo have expanded upon their musical legacy as they stare introspectively into their future.

HOT new band Boketto is making waves in the local music landscape

New on the South African musical scene, Boketto is a 5-piece band formed by singer-songwriter Callum Kuhl and guitarist David Arnot who met in high school in Johannesburg. In December 2015, after moving to Cape Town they recorded an album titled 'About You', a hybrid jazz, blues rock, folk, improvisation and groove-based album. Single ‘All I Want’ was released nationwide to radio in June and it's blasting up charts. It’s a song about love as a vice and an addiction. It’s a positive and negative look on a universal subject, bound together by a moody Jazz sonic landscape. Lead Singer / Songwriter Callum's vocals and acoustic guitar form the foundation for many of the songs alongside Dave's melodic and improvisational approach to lead guitar. Featuring the effortless but ferocious rhythmical drive of legendary South African jazz/rock drummer Kevin Gibson and the percussive prowess of Ronan Skillen on Tabla, Udu and percussion, Boketto lends from and combines sounds and genres across the spectrum, from esoteric to pop, from traditional to modern. Inspired by bands the likes of Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Radiohead, Alt-J, Carlo Mombelli, Atoms for Peace and more, this is a debut album far more mature than the age of the members creating it. The name Boketto is derived from the Japanese word meaning ‘The act of gazing vacantly into the distance, without thinking’. Callum notes – “I chose the name because the word itself has no direct English translation, the shortest way we can express it is ten words long, yet there’s this one idea in another language that captures it more perfectly in just one word. I believe music operates similarly - music has the potential to capture an expression of emotion better than five hours of talking. The artwork, a joint creation by Callum and his girlfriend Yuma is inspired by Yuma’s Mandala artwork. The experience of music comes from its ability to create the spectrum between beauty, symmetry, and what might seem like random choices and chaos. Callum adds – “The image of the cats creating a yin and yang surrounded by crashing waves is a reference to our beloved cat Alphonse who was knocked over by a car and killed. The cats are natural, beautiful and perfect, but they are being washed away by waves, a chaotic natural force that can take things from you without a moment’s notice. The cats are also a reference to our favourite writer; the Japanese author Haruki Murakami”. The album is titled ‘About You’ because, as Callum notes – “a lot of the lyrics have non-specific metaphors in them. While they mean a lot to me, I hope the feeling people get from the album is one that affirms their search for themselves”. Stand out tracks on ‘About You’ include the Led Zeppelin inspired ‘River Truth’, a song Callum wrote after attending his first Opikoppi and deciding he wanted to write a song he could perform there. As Callum recalls – “We were in traffic for 8 hours on the way home from Opikoppi with one Robert Plant CD and I heard the song ‘Mighty Rearranger’ dozens of times, it’s style influenced the sound quite a bit”. Another special track is ‘Yuma’ a song about love and the hope of its return even in times of separation. “I wrote this song as gift to my girlfriend on our 3rd anniversary, and the lyrics, ‘I’ll hold you in my arms, just come the new year’ were written when I thought she would probably be moving back. She didn’t, although we’re still together now and both in Cape Town so I’d say it’s a hopeful song”. ‘Changes’, an equally important song is about major life changes, amidst previous comfort zones. Callum notes, “When I got to university, everything about life started changing rapidly. I wrote this song to mark a kind of shift in my perspective to the idea that change in life is constant”. With an impressive line-up of experienced musicians and ground breaking music, the future looks very bright for Boketto.

Winner of M-Net’s The Voice SA Richard Stirton releases his debut single!

The Voice SA winner Richard Stirton released his debut single ‘What Tears Me The Most’ and it has already reached the Number 1 spot on the South African iTunes charts! Richard has been on a rollercoaster ride since winning The Voice SA on M-Net on 22 May having already earned his first major accolade of an iTunes #1 with his rendition of Simon & Garfunkel’s ‘The Sound of Silence’ from the hit show. Of this incredible journey Richard said, “These have been the most surreal last few months and I cannot believe I finally have the opportunity to start releasing original music. I am feeling very blessed and I hope that everybody enjoys the music I have to share.” He recently recorded his first original single, What Tears Me The Most, over a number of days in Johannesburg in early June. This heart-warming single was penned by Brit Awarding winning artist James Bay and is perfectly suited to Richard’s organic, authentic voice and magnetic sincerity. FOKOFPOLISIEKAR: Another 10 Year Celebration is in order

It is ten years since FOKOFPOLISIEKAR released Swanesang, their last full length album up to date, and true to form they have plans to celebrate this.

2006 was the year that FOKOFPOLISIEKAR released the Brand Suid-Afrika EP, was caught amid a ravaging media storm, recorded Swanesang at B Sharp Studios in Boksburg.  Their drummer, Jaco Snakehead Venter jumped out of the band’s tour van and broke his arm.  Justin Kruger had to temporarily replace him.  It was 100% rock 'n roll chaos. Die Bende released Swanesang, and felt driven to the point where they had to call a hiatus or call it quits.

The culturally and historically significant imprint they were making was the furthest thing from their minds as they were individually trying to figure out their way forward. "2003 – 2006 was a crazy roller-coaster ride. None of us were ready for how intense the ride was going to be. The touring and endless parties started taking its toll. We had to make a decision. Now, 10 years later, I can confess that we made the right one. The 8 months break we took in 2007 was the best move we as a band could have made,’’ says Wynand Myburgh, manager and bassist of Fokofpolisiekar.

It is ten years later and the Fokofpolisiekar influence has spread to the inception of popular and award winning bands, aKING, Die Heuwels Fantasties, Van Coke Kartel and Francois van Coke’s successful solo career.  The band continues to be celebrated in books, documentaries, movies and more. Most importantly they remain intimately connected. Not just as a band, but also in business: Wynand Myburgh manages Francois van Coke’s solo career.  Hunter Kennedy is part label owner at Supra Familias which released Francois’ debut solo album.  Johnny de Ridder is regularly involved with producing songs for the Die Heuwels Fantasties and Francois Van Coke.  Jaco Snakehead Venter has established himself as a band photographer and is the Fokof Lager brand manager.

The spirit of Fokof thrives as they continue to deliver the best live experience and reinforce their legacy by releasing crowd pleasers such as Fokof Lager on tap and vinyl editions of their musical releases. 2016 sees the official release of the Swanesang vinyl in July, a banging tour, fun competitions, and hopefully solving the mystery of how Johnny de Ridder doesn’t appear to age.

Jack Parow is recording with Jitsvinger this week - Dis Bef*k

Jack Parow is back in studio this week to record a remix of Dis Bef*k.  This song comes from the acoustic side of his double album, Nag van die Lang Pette.  Jitsvinger collaborates with Parow on the remake of this song that he wrote about his daughter.

“I’m happy to finally be working with Jitsvinger.  I’ve been a fan of his for a very long time.  His first album, Skeletsleutel, is one of my favourite Afrikaans albums of all time.  We’ve been talking about a collaboration for a long time, so it’s really very cool to be doing it now.  I think this is the first colab of many, because he’s an amazing MC and one of my favourite Afrikaans MC’s ever,” he says.

The Dis Bef*k Remix will be released at the end of August.

Music videos to the max

On Saturday evening, JACK PAROW bagged his first South African Music Award for his gevaarlike #zefspionage music video with Freshlyground, Army of One.

“It's going to look so lekker between my three action cricket medallions and my Celebrity Wheelchair Tennis Challenge trophy,” jokes Parow about this milestone in his career since his breakthrough 7 years ago with his smash hit Cooler as Ekke.

Army of One can be found on Jack Parow’s EP, From Parow with Love, which comprises, for the greater part, of collaborations with European acts.  Parow already released music videos with his Dutch collaborators for Kattenkwaad (with De Kraaien) and Thunderbolts & Lightning featuring Simon from De Likt, from this EP.

In May, the Belguim group, Ertebrekers, released their music video with Parow for Party Too Much.

TAXI VIOLENCE: Stuck in a Rut

To mark their 10 year anniversary 2014, the legendary rock band Taxi Violence released their fifth album, Tenfold.  This lauded album garnered a 2015 SAMA nomination in the ‘Best Rock Album’ category.  Since the album’s launch they have released music videos for Beaten by the Gun and Lazy Day. Now the guys are back with an enthralling and dreamlike music video for Stuck in a Rut. This breath taking music video paints the angst of when you are tired of the norm, but fear change. The band says that the song is about “that feeling of not being able to get out of the deep groove you’ve worn into daily life. You are surrounded by people every day, yet you feel helpless and isolated. You are stuck in a rut. It’s time for a change.”

RED HOT CD! Fifth Harmony

Fifth Harmony's 7/27 is here! The album has already hit #1 in 53 countries, including in South Africa! Since the release of their debut, Reflection, last year, the girl group's rise has been meteoric: 2016 has been marked with plenty of high-profile performances from 5H, not to mention teases of the new record with the smash single Work from Home which reached number one on the Billboard’s Pop Songs radio airplay chart. Earlier this month, Normani Kordei of Fifth Harmony opened up about the group's unlikely career path and working with Ty Dolla $ign on the wildly successful “Work from Home.” She noted that notions of success can often be tricky in the music business. “You’re never guaranteed success, especially in the music industry. It’s pretty unpredictable—just like anything in life. And sometimes, you need to take a different approach, as a creative artist.” The title 7/27 has significant meaning to the group. On the 27 of July 2012, the five girls (Ally Brooke, Normani Kordei, Dinah Jane, Camila Cabello, and Lauren Jaureguiand) officially became Fifth Harmony, a life changing moment for all five girls. Releasing the album today a week earlier than scheduled was an important choice. "The number 27, as you guys have already probably figured out, is quite important to us. It means a lot of different things," "And so to keep cohesive with the theme of 27, we have decided to push it one week to the 27th. One week will be nothing." Along with the fans, music critics adore Fifth Harmony and have interesting things to say about their talent with many critics hailing the group as the renaissance of American girl pop.

Van Wyk adds, “With no spoken language BLUE MAN GROUP is perfect for all ages, languages and cultures.  It gives everyone the freedom to reconnect with their inner child, to re-experience mischievousness, sheer joy and to see what fun three guys can have with 30 litres of paint and 120 marshmallows in the space of an hour and a half!”
