The Backstage Pass High School Jam competition will again be held at the GrandWest Grand Arena, Cape Town. The semi-finals will be held on Saturday, 23 August and the finals will be held the following day on 24 August. The competition, which is open to high schools throughout the Western Cape, encourages them to compete through music, dance and other performances while they gain exposure in the entertainment industry. The idea behind the competition is to provide interactive learning experiences for all the students involved. Eleven high schools have been chosen to compete in 2014. Three will be chosen to compete in the finals and the winning school stands a chance of winning R30 000. The two runner-up schools will each win R10 000. Individual prizes will also be awarded to solo and group performers across all ten schools. Last year the event attracted 1 200 students who performed to a sold-out audience of 10 000. Last year’s winners were Milnerton High School. Since 2011, the High School Jam has donated music equipment to disadvantaged schools in the Western Cape to the value of over R200 000. This year, all proceeds will again be donated to a disadvantaged school for the development and encouragement of music. Audiences can look forward to being entertained by beautiful voices, creative costumes and great productions. Tickets cost R30 per person and can be purchased at the door or via Karen Burt at karen@planetproductions.co.za
