Zahara’s debut ‘Loliwe’ goes for gold

If there is one new artist who is stamping her considerable mark over 2011 it’s Eastern Cape-born and bred singer and songwriter, Zahara and her debut album, Loliwe. Zahara’s record has proved a smash-hit, streaking past gold sales (20 000 units) just two weeks after it arrived in shops on 29 August. This is a remarkable feat for an album that features 12 soulful, folk and traditional-music inflected tracks sung in isiXhosa and English. Released by CCP Records/EMI Music South Africa, 12-track offering is finding an audience eager for the gorgeous music of the guitar-playing Zahara whose song writing forms the core of ‘Loliwe’. The album’s title track, penned by Zahara and, like the rest of the album, is produced by Robbie Mainga and Mojalefa Thebe, is also proving to be a hit on YouTube. The video has clocked up combined views of close to 45 000 views and is showing no signs of slowing down. The track is also racking up plays on radio throughout the country, further adding to the impact of this gifted newcomer. Zahara features on the song “Lengoma” on DJ S’bu’s just-released ‘Sound Revival’, and is signed to TS Records. She is currently lining up a slate of live dates to satisfy the growing demands of fans to see her perform.
