REVIEW! Sting - Back To Basics concert

Rock maestro Sting with violinist Peter Tickell
Cape Town, GrandArena -
27 March 2012
Sting's Back To Basics concert on Tuesday proved that playing the violin is ice cool. The young violinist Peter Tickell had the full house standing on their feet with his electric rock violin. He commanded the stage next to rocker Sting and had the audience scream for more. Just as impressive was long time guitarist Dominic Miller, his son Rufus Miller also on guitar, drummer Vinnie Colaiuta, and Australian jazz singer Jo Lawry's harmonies. The stage was simplistic. Nothing fancy. A stripped down production with no gimmicks and pyrotechnics  - just captain Sting and his crew wowing the audience in a 2 hour show concentrating on Sting's solo career - supporting a new retrospective box set, “Sting: 25 Years” - with a few Police hits thrown in. Before the song I Hung My Head Sting told the audience that the late Johnny Cash also did a "brilliant" cover of the song, but we think the Sting version is perfect. Fiels of Gold blew us away while Desert Rose, Roxanne, Every Breath You Take and King Of Pain had the crowd up and dancing. A brilliant show for those who attended and we're hoping the legend will return to South Africa in the near future for more of his musical brilliance.
