REVIEW! Lady Gaga - Live in Johannesburg

Lady Gaga in action on stage
“I don’t speak South African, but I speak the language of music, and that’s how I will communicate with you tonight my little monsters.” Lady Gaga had the 65 000+ strong crowd under her spell when she spoke those words on Friday evening at the FNB Stadium, Soweto, Johannesburg on the first gig of her Born This Way Ball Tour of South Africa.  We’ve never seen Lady Gaga live before – this was her first time in South Africa and she promised to return after the overwhelming “outpour of love for me and my music”.  We sure hope she sticks to her promise because watching her show is like watching an Cirque du Soleil extravaganza – it’s spectacular! From Mamma Monster arriving on stage on a horse, the Gothic medieval castle replica on stage to all her costume changes. She went from alien to fashion doll to dominatrix to rock chick in the two hour concert. And yes, she pushes the boundaries with simulating oral sex performed on her, speaking her mind (“I don’t give a f**k what people say about me”), giving birth to herself on stage and to wearing the now much talked about meat dress and inviting drag queens onto the stage for a “Queen off to find the Queen of the ball”. We were captivated by the splendour of the stage and the sets, the pumping music (she sings ALL her hits!) and her hyper active back-up dancers. And Cape Town , be warned – Mamma Monster wants to party! She told the Johannesburg crowd, “I don’t give a damn if you’re working tomorrow. I want to party and so you have to drink, get drunk and puke on your best friend sitting next to you.” Nice! The best part of the show was undoubtedly the giving birth to herself scene as an intro to her mega hit Born This Way. The downside for us was not the concert at all, but the drunk as a skunk guy who stood next to us trying to convince us that he is Rihanna’s best friend and that he’s not “captivated by the show”. Yeah dude, go try your tricks on someone else, but not on us little monsters!
