A polished break-up album from one of pop’s leading men,
Last Year Was Complicated reflects Nick Jonas’ transition into adulthood. But
he's careful not to overstate the album's purpose. It's sexy without being
scandalous (“I’ll never get over not getting under you,” he winks on the
R&B-leaning “Under You,”) and meditative but not mopey (he toyed with
naming the album after the heart breaking ballad "Unhinged" before
going with something a little less woeful). And with help from Max Martin
(Taylor Swift, The Weeknd), his signature, smart pop sound remains perfectly
intact, even if Jonas himself is on the mend. Singer/songwriter,
multi-instrumentalist, and actor Nick Jonas is best known as one-third of the
hugely popular Disney Channel sibling pop/rock act the Jonas Brothers. After
2010, Nick has focused primarily on his own career, releasing solo material,
appearing in musicals, and acting in film and television. A performer since the
age of seven (the age at which he joined the Broadway cast of Annie Get Your Gun),
Nicholas made his songwriting debut in 2002, when a holiday tune he'd
co-written with his father found its way onto a Broadway Christmas album. A
contract with Columbia Records followed two years later.
