Zakwe in action
Zakwe - The CD
Who said the beautiful ones are not yet born? Please welcome Zakwe’s freshman and official album self titled ‘Zakwe’. Born and bred in KwaMashu Township, north of Durban; this Kasi rapper has made a mark with his strong voice, great lyrics, township stories and sounds full of blackness. Having released his two mixtapes in 2010, Zakwe has made a huge impact in the underground scene as two of his tracks within the tape entered in Hype Sessions, whilst ‘Bathi Ng’yachoma’ (a teaser for best things to come) became an unintentional hit single and earned massive national airplay and live television performance appearances. His feature on Zuluboy’s track ‘Zobe Zisho’, earned Zakwe a recording and artist management contract with Native Rhythms. Now, Zakwe’s long-anticipated album has finally arrived. Who’s on the Beat: Zakwe’s lyrical skill attracted the most sought aft er beatmakers who wanted to make their mark on the album already set to rock the streets, the townships, villages, the cities and hopefully the rest of the world. The SAMA Award-winning rap artist and producer, Amu (The Principal) has 2 beats on the album, whilst Dome (the most celebrated beatmaker) has 1 beat on the album. Kay Master and Esphi, the usual suspects behind Zakwe’s music are dominant in this 18-track album under the watchful eye of Ngane – not to be left out. Rizzlah Joint, Trevor Trey and Wonder Ngxongo also made themselves with their off erings. This album features the hottest crews in Durban right now, Tira with Big Nuz on ‘Deal is Done’, Zuluboy and Danger are on the remix of ‘Bathi Ng’yachoma, Abdus, Maraza and Lungelo are on the track ‘Music’ with Njabulo on ‘Abafowethu’. Native Rhythms’ own - The Soil and Vuyo Tyolo - are prominent on the tracks ‘Jikeleza’ and ‘Home’, respectively. It is now offi cial, that Zakwe has earned street cred – and a stamp saying ‘the streets have recognized that the soldier has won the battle is now most definitely ready for war’. It’s Native!
