DJ Fresh gives the lowdown on the 2014 Ultra Music Festival coming to SA for the 1st time in February

DJ Fresh (Credit: 5FM)
In a mere few weeks the 2014 Ultra Music Festival will be in South Africa for the very first time. The festival is the world's premier electronic music festival featuring the cream of the crop in the EDM (Electronic Dance Music) industry. The South African version of the annual dance music extravaganza will see local stars like Mi Casa, Goldfish, Euphonik and 5FM’s DJ Fresh (aka Big Dawg), to name a few, sharing the stage with international acts such as Blasterjaxx, Claude VonStroke, Martin Garrix and Tiësto. The Beat caught up with DJ Fresh to tell us more about this event.

You must be pretty stoked that this festival is coming to South Africa? Oh yes, indeed! It’s super cool. I’ve had the privilege to attend most of this annual festival around the world and now it’s finally coming to South Africa. Wow man, that is so cool!

What is the festival all about? If you like EDM (Electronic Dance Music) you’ll love this festival. EDM has grown so much over the past few years that it has evolved in EDM festivals being held around the world. And I think the South African market is ready for something like this. Local musicians gets the chance to share the stage with the international artists and music producers. It’s basically an orgy of EDM! (Laughs).

Martin Garrix (Credit: DJ Martin Garrix via Twitter)
There are really some big names playing at the festival, but which one are you excited about? Man, there are so many. I’ve shared the stage with most of them, but if I should choose someone, it would have to be Martin Garrix. This guy, or kid,  is only 17-years-old and he has already set the EDM scene ablaze with his amazing skills and tunes. He released some awesome tunes like Animals, Trojan, Gamer, Helicopter, Tremor and Wizard. Just a few that pops into my head. I really want to see his set at the festival.

Talking about sets, how do you prepare your set for such an event? I don’t. Some believe in pre-prepping your music for an event, and others don’t. I’m with the latter. I think it’s safe to say that pre-prepping is a bit lazy. I just go with the flow. I’ll feel the vibe from the audience and play according to that. It’s a thrill for me. You know, well-known DJ Armin van Buuren has proven my point by playing un-prepped shows while syncing it with visuals. Man, that’s amazing!

Besides the festivals, when will we see another The Fresh Drive Presents...Cheese Of The Day CD? I loved the tunes on the CD as it’s music I grew up listening to. Ha ha ha – me to man. Well, we’ve put forward a proposal to management for another one, so we are just waiting. In March I’m releasing Fresh Goes Electro and then I’m also in studio working on Fresh House Flavours Volume 8, that should hopefully be out by August/September.

*The Ultra Music Festival will take place in Cape Town at the Ostrich Farm on Friday 14 February and in Johannesburg on Saturday 15 February at the Nasrec Showgrounds.

The Awakening to tour South Africa in March!

The Awakening, South Africa's favourite dark rock export, is set to tour their home country for the first time since relocating to the USA in 2008. The band will be playing 7 shows across South Africa in support of their latest release, "Anthology XV". The album, currently available on iTunes, features 21 songs spanning 15 years of music releases by The Awakening. Every song has been re-mixed, re-worked or re-recorded. The selection includes all the essential tracks, alternate versions, new versions and 2 new songs - the underground dance floor favourite "Fault" and the dark and melancholy "Beneath Your Feet". Since relocating to the US, The Awakening released their 8th album, "Tales Of Absolution + Obsoletion" in 2009 and completed work on "Anthology XV". The band has completed several US tours, including a headline slot on the HM Stage at the Cornerstone Festival, featuring the likes of As I Lay Dying, Flyleaf and many more. The band supported goth-industrial legends London After Midnight on the same tour. Front man and songwriter Ashton Nyte also released his 5th solo album, "The Valley" in 2010 and has recorded 2 new solo albums, one in English and one in Afrikaans, due to be released in 2014. Apart from touring his solo work from New York to New Orleans, other highlights included a feature on PRI’s “The World” and an on-air performance on “Border Crossings” to over 125 million listeners. The Awakening has enjoyed a dedicated following in South Africa since the release of "Risen" in 1997, featuring their rendition of "The Sound Of Silence", now a cult classic. Numerous nation-wide tours, headline slots at festivals like Oppikoppi and Ramfest and extensive radio and media support have maintained The Awakening's iconic status and fueled the necessity for another South African tour. See the band Thursday 20 March - Rumours Lounge (Johannesburg, West Rand), Friday 21 March - The Doors (Johannesburg, East Rand), Saturday 22 March - Zeplins (Centurion), Wednesday 26 March - LIVE The Venue (Durban), Thursday 27 March - Barnyard (Vereeniging), Friday 28 March - Mercury Live (Cape Town) and Saturday 29 March (acoustic show) - Aandklas (Stellenbosch).

GRAMMY AWARDS! My favourite Grammy moments...

I'm a music animal. Since a very young boy I've devoured everything musical - be it music magazines, my favourite music shows on radio and TV (in South Africa shows like Pop Shop & Fast Forward), and of course, the highlight of my yearly musical experience - the annual Grammy Awards. With the 56th Grammy Awards taking place this Sunday, 26 January (airing live on Channel O Monday 27 January, DStv channel 320, from 03:00 until 06:30) I thought I'll share some of my best Grammy moments.

1.Eurythmics - Sweet Dream - 1984
I've always loved Eurythmics. Their ever evolving music style gripped me and the various transformations of Annie Lennox baffled me. This song, performed at the 1984 Grammy Awards, made me jump up and sing along. Sweet Dreams will always be a legendary Eurythmics song.

2. Prince & The Revolution - Baby, I'm A Star - 1985
The first ever seven single (7") I bought was When Doves Cry by Prince & The Revolution. I was hooked by this mysterious character and his his various enigmas. I got to know Prince with the soundtrack of his brilliant movie, Purple Rain. At the 1985 Grammy Awards, he and The Revolution gave a mind blowing performance of the song, Baby, I'm A Star!Watch the video with the link below!

3. Michael Jackson - Man In The Mirror & The Way You Make Me Feel - 1988
For me, Michael Jackson was the god of music. Seriously. In the early 80s with Thriller, I was addicted. His voice. His dance moves. The moonwalk. Everything. When Michael came on TV, I screamed like a girl. I loved him and have always thought (in the post-Thriller years) that his music was brilliant. In 1988 he performed The Way You Make Me Feel and Man In The Mirror at the Grammy Awards. Awesome!

4. Gorillaz, Madonna & De La Soul - 2006
I was there! I was there! I was fortunate enough to be part of an international media delegation who got to attend the 48th Grammy Awards. The opening was spectacular! Animated act Gorillaz took to the stage to perform the Record of the Year-nominated "Feel Good Inc.," joined briefly by the real De La Soul and a hologram of Madonna. But when the real Madge appeared onstage moments later to perform her 2005 hit "Hung Up," with its sexy dancing and ABBA samples, the Grammy crowd truly let loose.

5. Kanye West & Daft Punk - Stronger - 2008
Daft Punk is one of those electro bands that you either love or hate. I love them. They are mysterious as there is all this mystery surrounding them as you always see them wearing this robot helmets. In 2007 Kanye West released the single Stronger which sampled a track from the French house duo, Daft Punk. At the Grammy's in 2008, Kanye performed the song and the elusive Daft Punk made an appearance during the performance, which almost lifted the roof of the venue as people when crazy! I also went crazy!

6. Eminem & Elton John - Stan - 2001
Slim Shady, aka Eminem, outraged the LGBT community with  the homophobia-tinged lyrics on his 2000 album "The Marshall Mathers LP". Superstar and gay activist Elton John crossed the picket lines and joined Em's performance of "Stan" at the ceremony in a move that was musically powerful, as well as political.

7. Adele's return - Rolling In The Deep - 2012
The British super star had the music world worried when she had throat surgery that threatened her career in 2011. During the 2012 Grammy's the singer returned to the biggest musical stage with her hit Rolling In The Deep, showing fans and the world that she is OK! Of course, the venue went crazy, Adele lifted the roof. She got a standing ovation and fist-pumping from Sir Paul McCartney.

What artists to look out for in 2014

With the first month of 2014 almost done and dusted, I've wondered what new local acts will heat up the music scene. It's quite a tough call, but iTunes ZA then released the names of these artists to look out for in 2014, and I agree with this. They are going to be hot!

These electro-houe duo recorded an undeniably dancebale debut, I'm So Crunked Up with Lakota Silva.

This charismatic Ugandan rapper crafts a jubilant mix of breezy Afro-pop and hip-hop swagger for her inspired performance.

The Kiffness
Jazzy and groovy, steeped in traditions raging from funky house to African pantsula, The Kiffness' sound is a dance floor delight.

5. Xtatic
Armed with a masterful flow and infectious energy, Kenyan rapper Xtatic is a hitmaker along the lines of Nicki Minaj and Ciara.

6. Anders
The Afrikaans husband & wife team of Wynand and Lindi Delport write lovely ballads, up-tempo country and rollicking roots rock.

Kylie Minogue is back on the dance floor!

Ozzie pop princess Kylie Minogue is back with a bang! Her new killer tune Into The Blue is out this week and will be the first track released from Kylie’s highly anticipated new album to be released later this year. The song, a euphoric return to the dance-floor after 2012’s, “Abbey Road Sessions”, was written by Kelly Sheehan (known for his work with Mary J Blige, Rita Ora, Beyonce). Kylie spent 2013 recording her new album in both the U.S. and the UK with a host of producers including, Pharrell, Greg Kurstin, Metrophonic, Cutfather, MNEK and Ariel Rechtshaid. The new album will be Kylie’s 12th studio record and the first album of new material since 2010’s “Aphrodite”. Kylie said,
“2013 was a year of big change, planning and preparation for me and I’m so excited that 2014 is finally here so I can share this new music .  Into The Blue is really special to me as it encapsulates a lot of what I’ve been feeling - I can’t wait for it to be out there.”

Snoop Dogg to "appear" in new PSY music video

Rapper Snoop Dogg is teaming up with Korean super star PSY and starring in his new music video. Billboard.com says that photos from the video shoot were revealed on YG Entertainment's YG Life blog and PSY and G-Dragon's Twitter, showing the "Gangnam Style" star and Snoop posing in a pool hall along with shots of the duo slow dancing in a karaoke bar with middle-aged women while being serenaded by G-Dragon. It is also rumoured that Snoop has "taken part" in PSY's new CD and that even Aerosmith's Steven Tyler could make a guest appearance. PSY has snagged the most watched video on YouTube two years running: 2012's "Gangnam Style" has earned 1.88 billion views; "Gentleman" has earned 627 million. Now that is cool!

Daft Punk vs Stevie Wonder @ Grammy's 2014

Woo-hoo! I'm so excited! My favourite dance duo Daft Punk are set to team up with the legendary Stevie Wonder at the 56th Grammy Awards, which will air on Channel O (DStv 320) at 06:00 on Monday 27 January. There will be a repeat of the awards at 20:30. According to the independent.co.uk Daft Punk are working with the 63-year-old Stevie, rapper Pharrell Williams and Nile Rodgers. Guy Manuel de Homem Christo and Tomas Bangalter (Daft Punk) will play tracks from their fourth studio album, Random Access Memories, at the Staples Centre ceremony in Los Angeles. “Details of the performance are still being worked out,” said Ken Ehrlich, executive producer of the Grammys. “But the idea of having the exclusive television performance by this iconic band is something we’re very, very excited about. “It will be a collaborative and celebratory stage performance that honours their multi-nominated music.” The robotic pair’s "celebratory" set will be their first televised performance since collaborating with Kanye West in 2008 and their first live performance of Random Access Memories material. Daft Punk have been nominated for four awards: Record of the Year and Best Pop Group Performance for "Get Lucky" and Album of the Year and Best Dance/Electronica Album for Random Access Memories, released in May 2013. Other acts set to perform at the 2014 ceremony include P!nk, Kendrick Lamar and Imagine Dragons.

5 Things not to do at a music concert

It's a new year which means an loads of music acts on their way to South Africa. For instance, Bruce Springsteen, Bryan Adams, Eminem, Josh Stone, Tiesto, Armin van Buuren - the list is endless. But have you notice that it seems these days that people are not focusing on the act on stage anymore, but keeping themselves busy with other things, like the constant Facebook updates, Twitter updates on their phones while the show is in full swing? After attending quite a lot of shows in 2013, I'd though to make a list of what not to do at a concert.

1.Alcohol is good - puking is bad
Sometimes I wonder why people even bother to go to a concert if they going to get so flippin drunk that they either pass out or puke. Seriously? To have a couple of drinks at a show is normal, heck I love it, but I don't go bezerk and drink myself into a coma or puke over my fellow concert goers and then pass out. Why pay the money for the ticket if you can rather get drunk and unrudely at your house?

2. Talk talk talk
Music at a concert is loud, so it's hard to speak to your friends - you literally have to yell in their ears to let them hear what you have to say, but to do it constantly, not cool. If you were standing next to me at a concert and constantly talking to me, you'll get a smack. So be warned.

3. Sit Down
James released the awesome song Sit Down in the 90s, but to yell to people who are standing to Sit Down - how rude of you! They are there to enjoy themselves! If you want to be the grumpy old man (or lady) who would rather sit down at a concert, then you could have gotten yourselves some DVDs and watched it at home. Let the people who stand enjoy themselves. If you prefer to sit at a concert, be warned, tensions might just boil over between those who prefer to sit and those who stand infront of them. Come on, we all go to shows to enjoy ourselves.

4. Filming
At the recent Nickelback concert at GrandWest in Cape Town, there was this dude sitting with a small hand held recorder on his lap, filming the whole show. Seriously? You paid good money for the show, why sit and concentrate on what you are filming rather than sitting (or standing) and enjoying the show? FYI - it's illegal to film concerts (although everybody does it - but the quality sucks big time! Just go check some clips or full shows on YouTube).

5. Pictures and online activity
So, you paid a lot of money to go watch your favourite band. You are excited. In fact, so excited that you constantly take photos of the show - non-stop. It's irritating! And those with smart phones, what's up with constantly checking your emails, updating Facebook and updating Twitter. You are not at a technological convention. You are at a music concert! Put away the phones! Especially when the houselights go down and the act comes on stage, you just see the glimmering lights of poeple taking photos. So it seems that the smart phone has replaced the old lighter (as smoking is banned from concerts in the venue).

ABBA celebrate 40th anniversary of Eurovision win

It’s official, 2014 is the year of ABBA! The reason: On 6 April it will be exactly 40 years since the band won the Eurovision Song Contest 1974 in Brighton, England and became a part of music history. Music-news.com reports that the  Universal Music Group plans on rolling out a year of celebrations for ABBA with numerous reissues, bonus tracks and activities. ABBA won the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest with their song 'Waterloo'. The impact of broadcast of the song made 'Waterloo' an international hit reaching number one across Europe in Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Netherlands, Norway and Switzerland. 'Waterloo' also reached no. 1 in South Africa, no. 4 in Australia and no. 6 in the USA. 'Waterloo' was the first single and title track off ABBA's second album. It was also the first Abba release to use the Abba name. Abba's first album 'Ring Ring' was credited as Björn, Benny, Agnetha, Frida. In later years the artist name was changed to ABBA.

Shakira ft. Rihanna's sexy single cover art for "Can't Remember to Forget You" finally revealed

Oooh, this is hot! Shakira has revealed the hot cover art of her new duet with Rihanna, Can't Remember to Forget You, which will be available from Monday 13 January. All we can say about the cover art - SEXY! The single is the first from her new CD which still don't has an official release date. In the February issue of Glamour, Shakira gushes about working with Rihanna and calls it a "utopia. She further said, "at the end of the day, we're both just basically Caribbean girls. The chemistry was so good and so real. She taught me dance moves. She was a sweet teacher." Now I’m just counting down to see the official video!

Skylight release their debut album, Made For More

Skylight's formula for success: Love. On first listen of Skylight’s debut album, Made For More, produced and recorded with Grammy- and SAMA-winning producer, Darryl Torr, it’s clear that their music is ‘’more” than a few melodic chord progressions strung together. As pleasing as it is to the ear, the songs are equally embedded with a sense of meaning and purpose that has elevated Skylight to where they are today, not only as musicians but as individuals as well. Spreading the need for love and peace, Skylight work together with those around them to raise awareness worldwide, and it is with this sentiment that they hope their music will have broader reach, extending out to international markets. It has taken the band over two years of writing, pre-production and recording to produce their debut album, but one thing for sure - it doesn’t disappoint. Skylight’s roots can be traced back to 2009 when three like-minded musos - Greg Jorden (vocals and guitar), Peter Klein (bass) and Bradley Cumming (drums) and later Wesley Ayliffe (guitar and back-up vocals) - joined forces after performing at a music event. The trio soon began writing music together, the chemistry instantaneous, and their individual visions started to take form. In 2010, their song Always Enough became an instant hit, and it wasn’t long before the track secured them a spot on the “Joburg Day” line-up, performing in front of 18 000 people. Early 2013, Skylight released their first single Give It Up, a taster of what they have to offer and it only gets better. This summer the band introduces the catchy hooks of Born To Love You, taking their fans into 2014 with a smile. There is one thing, of course, that cannot be expressed through written word but must be seen and heard in person, and that is Skylight live in action. The energy generated from a single performance is enough to keep you going for an entire week, but if all else fails; now you can pop a disc into your CD player and enjoy! Metal band Lamb Of God on their way to SA!

Heavy Metal supporters in South Africa have held their breath since early in 2012 when rumours first emerged that a local appearance by USA metal titans Lamb Of God was imminent.  Hopes were dashed later that year when the remainder of the bands tour was cancelled in mid-2012 and activity curbed to within United States borders up until June this year. In fulfilling an old promise, Lamb Of God are finally on the road and catching up on a major back log of shows across the globe.  The great news for South Africa is that two dates have been squeezed into the bands cram-packed touring schedule for early 2014.Lamb Of God will melt faces on Friday 24 January in Cape Town (Cape Town City Hall Auditorium), and Saturday 25 January in Johannesburg (The Johannesburg Expo Centre, Nasrec, Hall 8). "With only two dates available, we'll be touring them to Cape Town and Johannesburg," said Dawid Fourie of RAM Touring, "and we're expecting that by playing those two cities, the maximum number of fans will get an opportunity to begin planning early for a trip to one of the larger centres." Lamb Of God, from the State of Virginia in the USA, were formed in 1990 with current members John Campbell on bass, Mark Morton on Guitar, and the legendary Chris Adler on Drums.  Vocalist Randy Blythe joined in 1995 and drummer Chris's brother Willie Adler replaced Abe Spear on guitar in 1999, resulting in the current line-up which spans more than a decade; and introducing the electrifying chemistry which has launched a successful career for the band we see today. Tickets via www.computicket.co.za, or from any Computicket outlet nationwide. General standing is available at R450 and for Golden Circle, only R550.

My Most Anticipated Albums of 2014

With the 2014 in full swing, I am truly excited about all the music goodies for this year. Below is a list of my favourite CD releases I'm looking forward to:

Bruce Springsteen - High Hopes
The Boss is touring South Africa in late January and early February so fans will most definitely hear some of his new music from his much anticipated new CD High Hopes. Here is high hopes for the CD being a huge success! The CD will include a guest spot from Rage Against The Machine's Tom Morello.

U2 - To Be Confirmed
It felt just like yesterday I saw U2 live in Cape Town, and now it's time for the Irish rockers to unleash their new music for their millions of fans! The rumour mill is pointing to an April release. This will be their first CD since 2009's No Line On The Horizon. Rumoured titles for the new CD include 'Songs of Ascent' and '10 Reasons To Exist'. This should be an interesting release as producers Danger Mouse, Will.i.am, David Guetta, and RedOne have all reportedly recorded tracks with the band.

Metallica - To Be Confirmed
In a recent interview with the Oakland Press, frontman James Hetfield hinted that the band could deliver a new CD this year. He said, "We have tons of material to sift through. That takes a lot of time, because there's a lot of great stuff," he said, adding, "We go full-throttle into something and multitasking is not what we're after. So the next record will hopefully start sometime in the spring." The band's last album was "Death Magnetic," unless you count "Lulu," the ill-fated 2011 collaboration with Lou Reed.

"It's a little ways off — it's not ready to happen right now, but I think next year is going to be a really big year for the Foo Fighters without question."

Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga - Cheek to Cheek
We have been waiting and waiting for this one and now it seems it might happen at last before Christmas 2014. Although the release date is yet to be confirmed, Tony is quite excited about the release, ""It is a very sensational jazz album, with great jazz artists on it; it came out wonderful," he said during a recent interview in Japan. "We recorded all great standards, quality songs; George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Jerome Kern, Irving Berlin, songs like that. With a big swingin' band and great, great, jazz artists playing."
