South African radio legend DJ Phil Wright dead

In my young days, I was a big fan of local rock DJ Phil Wright who featured on one on my all-time favourite radio stations, 5FM. He was like the preacher of rock music for me on the diverse 5FM (or Radio 5 as it was called back then). So it was with great shock and sadness that I learnt of his death yesterday. According to reports, he was found dead in his Johannesburg home. "He has definitely passed on,"  a good friend Leon Economides said. He said Wright, 55, was last seen by friends on Sunday. He felt poorly and went home. Economides said these friends tried to contact Wright on Monday but could not get hold of him, so they went to his house on Tuesday, where they heard his dog barking inside. "They managed to break through the kitchen door and found him in the bathroom." He said an autopsy still needed to be performed, but it was thought he died due to a heart attack. On Twitter veteran DJ Alex Jay paid his respects. "Many yrs (years) ago, angling for a compliment, I asked my wife who had the best voice on radio. She didn't hesitate. 'It's Phil Wright' RIP Phil." Talk radio 702 host Ray White tweeted: "Fond memories of Phil Wright during my days on 5fm. So sorry to hear the news this morning..."

Stone Temple Pilots fires singer Scott Weiland

Scott Weiland
Now this is just bizarre!Rockers Stone Temple Pilots have dumped their singer Scott Weiland. Music-News.com reports that the band, in a one-paragraph statement published on the Stone Temple Pilots website, 'Stone Temple Pilots have announced they terminated Scott Weiland. No further information is available at this time'. Scott reacted by saying on Facebook: I learned of my supposed 'termination' from Stone Temple Pilots this morning by reading about it in the press. Not sure how I can be 'terminated' from a band that I founded, fronted and co-wrote many of its biggest hits, but that's something for the lawyers to figure out. In the meantime, I'm looking forward to seeing all of my fans on my solo tour which starts this Friday'." Scott founded Stone Temple Pilots with the DeDeo brothers Robert and Dean and drummer Eric Kretz in 1986 but they split in 2003 because of Scott's erratic behaviour due to drug abuse. The band reformed in 2008 and played a North American tour. A 6th album 'Stone Temple Pilots' was also released and debuted at no. 2 in America. Last year Stone Temple Pilots released the live DVD 'Alive In The Windy City'.

Anastacia's second fight with cancer

Our hearts and thoughts go out to the American pop/rock singer Anastacia. The "I'm Outta Love" singer has been diagnosed for a second time with breast cancer. The 44-year-old singer successfully fought a battle against the disease in 2003, but has now cancelled an upcoming European tour - which was due to begin in London on April 6 - to focus on her health after receiving the devastating news that the cancer has returned.  post on her Facebook page read: "Anastacia has sadly been diagnosed with breast cancer for the second time after having successfully survived her 2003 battle with the disease. Consequently she has been forced to cancel all performances, tours and any travel from now until further notice." The singer added: "I feel so awful to be letting down all my amazing fans who were looking forward to 'It's A Man's World Tour'. It just breaks my heart to disappoint them." We're holding thumbs for you, Anastacia....

HOT REMIX! Depeche Mode Vs. Freemasons

Depeche Mode
Me being such a big Depeche Mode fan, was quite surprised to hear the awesome funky remix of the group's latest hit, Heaven. The remix is by the Freemasons, with a synced video edit from DJ-Roland. The Freemasons are in my personal top 5 DJs, purely because of their production ability and the fact I cannot get enough of their sound. As for a description of their sound; I call it Dance, but it’s strictly Club styled House music with a flare of pop sound. For other music by the Freemasons, check out their album Shakedown 2, and their numerous Club Mixes, namely Hurts – Better Than Love (Freemasons Pegasus Club Mix). The song Heaven is from Depeche Mode’s new CD, Delta Machine, which will be released end March. Watch the funky video of the Freemasons version of Depeche Mode's Heaven, HERE!

Alice In Chains @ nr 1 - again

Alt. rockers Alice In Chains' Hollow has hit No. 1—again!—this time topping the Active Rock radio chart. That follows five consecutive weeks during which the song maintained the No. 1 slot on the Mainstream Rock radio chart. Not bad for an almost-6-minute-long song that was never intended to be a single. Initially released over as a fan-driven lyric video, “Hollow” struck a chord with radio programmers, who bypassed traditional procedure to put the song on air. Rather than wait to receive an official edited track from the band’s label, stations have been playing “Hollow” in its entirety (the song is almost twice the length of the average radio single). Over the course of the weeks that followed, the track’s radio spins increased exponentially, making it the No. 1 Top Gainer at Active Rock for six consecutive weeks. Hollow appears on Alice In Chains’ upcoming album, The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here, due out this May.

80s star Jennifer Rush to perform in South Africa

Jennifer Rush
80s Superstar Jennifer Rush is heading for South African shores with four exclusive performances only in Cape Town and Johannesburg. She is one of pop music’s most successful vocal artists of the last three decades and with her phenomenal voice and major hit songs the likes of Power of Love and Ring of Ice, she will appear on South Africa’s stage for a whirlwind tour. In fact, this international pop sensation will perform in our country for the first time ever for two exclusive performances at the Cape Town International Convention Theatre, 26 and 27 April 2013 at 20:00, and two exclusive performances in Johannesburg at the Theatre of the Marcellus at Emperors Palace, 3 and 4 May 2013 at 20:00. The New York-born songstress’ successful career began in the mid 80’s when her single 25 Lovers was play-listed on numerous radio stations across Europe and became her first commercial hit. Accompanied by her next hit single, the hugely recognizable Ring of Ice, her self-titled debut album, Jennifer Rush, exceeded all expectations and remained on the German Top 75 for over an almost unprecedented 100 weeks. Then, her most famous tune of all time, Power of Love, was released and marked the birth of “the love song of the decade”. The timeless ballad topped the charts from Scandinavia to South Africa, reached the Top 10 in 16 countries, entered the US Billboard Charts and was listed in the Guinness Book of Records as “the bestselling single by a female solo artist in the history of British pop music”. Though this is her first performance in South Africa, Jennifer has in fact recorded on our turf when she contributed to an album titled Credo which was made in Johannesburg with local choirs and was very well-received. She believes that her debut South African performances are "a dream come true" and to celebrate this Jennifer will be accompanied by very special guest stars in the form of the SA Youth Choir in Cape Town and the legendary Drakensberg Boys Choir in Johannesburg, who will assist the superstar in turning her four exclusive performances into memorable and epic events. Booking is now open at Computicket and tickets cost from R450.

CD REVIEW! A$AP Rocky - Long.Live.A$AP

If you like your hip-hop and rap like you love Jay-Z, then give 'newbie'A$AP a listen. In late 2011 this young Harlem MC (born Rakim Mayers) announced his arrival with an impressive mix-tape, "Live Love ASAP," that married a streetwise lyrical sensibility to plush, pop-savvy beats. Now, less than 18 months later, he's releasing his feverishly anticipated major-label debut, Long.Live.A$AP. His debut CD sees input from A-list producers such as Danger Mouse and Skrillex and guest appearances by Drake and Florence Welch. "It feel good waking up to money in the bank," he admits in the album's lead single, "Goldie," and you can hear in his unhurried swagger that he knows the security of which he speaks. A$SAP is a magnetic persona and has a knack for crafting dreamy hip-hop anthems – tracks that might seem underground on paper but ultimately have the unmistakable feel of a hit.

Get your ghetto swag on with Thrift Shop

A couple of months ago I got an urgent SMS from my youngest sister in Australia: "Go listen to the song Thrift Shop and watch the video. It's HOT!" I'm always interested when I get a message like that because she has a touch for picking hit songs before they're a hit. I listened to the song and LOVED the video! And now it's a huge radio hit here in South Africa. Seattle rapper Macklemore gets ghetto fab - "Thrift Store" style - in his latest single about ... well, shopping at the thrift store. It's a must-see for those lookin' to be fly on the cheap: In the video, Macklemore and producer pal Ryan Lewis scour area thrift stores for everything from fur coats to batman pyjamas to cowboy jackets ... straight BALLER. The track and its hilarious lyrics and sax-tastic beat appear on Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' new album, The Heist, which debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200. Thrift Shop is a viral sensation that's funny and captures the hipster zeitgeist perfectly and it's a hip-hop song with some naughty words... Watch the video for the song, HERE!

Kylie and Mariah release new songs

Aaah, a new year and some new music! Mariah Carey and Kylie Minogue have both release new songs that are featured on the soundtrack from two movies. Mariah Carey's new single 'Almost Home', taken from the movie Oz The Great and the Powerful, has leaked online in full. Almost Home' is produced by Stargate and is already available on iTunes. Oz the Great and Powerful stars James Franco, Mila Kunis, Michelle Williams and Rachel Weisz. Mariah is currently a judge on American Idol alongside Nicki Minaj, Keith Urban and show veteran Randy Jackson.
Ozzie pop princess Kylie Minogue has also released a new song called 'Whistle'. The singer collaborated with Icelandic band múm on the track, which is available to download from iTunes now. 'Whistle' is taken from the soundtrack to Jack and Diane, the romantic drama starring Juno Temple and Riley Keough. Minogue also makes an appearance in the movie. múm member Gunnar Tynes met with Minogue in London back in 2011, where the pair recorded the song. "It is not the typical pop song we might have written for Minogue but we rather wrote it with the film in mind," Tynes said of the track. Kylie recently signed a management deal with Jay-Z's Roc Nation and plans to release a new single "soon", followed by her 12th studio album.

Dave Grohl likes Paul McCartney's jam sessions

Dave Grohl
Foo Fighters front man Dave Grohl is impressed by how Sir Paul McCartney is 'willing to go off' during jam sessions, reports music-news.com. Dave and Krist Novoselic, the two surviving members of Nirvana, teamed up with Paul for a performance at the recent 12-12-12 concert in December at Madison Square Garden, which benefitted those affected by Hurricane Sandy. Dave and Paul have developed a tight musical bond of late and often play together. The Foo Fighters rocker understands why the Beatles songwriter is such a legend. 'I remember rehearsing with him for the Grammys. He comes in and just wants to jam,' Dave told People magazine. 'He's willing to go off more than most younger musicians.' Dave debuted his new documentary Sound City, about a legendary Los Angeles music studio, at the Sundance Film Festival recently. New to the film industry, the musician is amazed by how the feature came together. 'The idea was to make a YouTube clip to piggyback on the 20th anniversary of Nirvana's Nevermind [which was recorded at Sound City],' Dave explained. 'We asked a list of people who made records there to be involved: Tom Petty, Neil Young. Everybody got back saying they wanted to be in it. 'I don't know how this movie world works. I'm pretty sure the fact that we completed it is nothing short of a miracle. 'Sound City is scheduled for release later this year.

Justin Bieber - Believe Acoustic

Ok, we hear all the little girlies screams of joy (and it's quite irritating) with the mere mention of the name Justin Bieber. Fans of the Prince of Pop should flock to Believe Acoustic; this highly-anticipated 11-song album offers acoustic versions of eight songs from Justin’s worldwide multi-platinum #1 album Believe. Included are acoustic takes on four of his biggest radio hits: “Boyfriend,” “As Long As You Love Me,” “Beauty And A Beat,” and “All Around The World.” Delighted listeners will also find acoustic renditions of album tracks “Take You” and “Be Alright,” as well as of “She Don’t Like The Lights” (originally a bonus track on the deluxe version of 2012’s Believe). All acoustic tracks were co-produced by Justin Bieber and his guitarist Dan Kanter. As if that weren’t enough post-holiday pandemonium, Believe Acoustic also introduces previously unreleased songs “Yellow Raincoat,” produced by Justin and Tom Strahle, “I Would,” produced by Da Internz and Aaron Michael Cox, and “Nothing Like Us,” written and produced solely by Justin, which gives fans an unprecedented and intimate glimpse of young love. Fans can also expect a live studio version of “Fall,” from Believe, likewise produced by Bieber and Kanter. This is great treat for Beliebers and nice way to prepare for his tour of South Africa this year...and it makes a good Valentine gift...

Madonna's Valentine’s Day

Whant to know what Madonna is up to Valentine’s Day? Well, thanks to her blabber mouth boyfriend Brahim Zaibat the couple's Valentine's Day plans will be pretty normal. And the 25-year-old dancer says it is likely that February 14 will involve dinner and a movie 'like everybody else.' Speaking after modelling at the Jeremy Scott Fall 2013 fashion show at New York Fashion Week, Brahim revealed the special day will be no different from any other. "Valentine's Day for me is every day,' he declared to ET Online. 'There is no one day for love. If you love, it's every day." Brahim has been dating the Material Girl for two years following her divorce from film director husband Guy Ritchie. The Frenchman, who is 30 years Madonna's junior, said they are equals when it comes to romance. 'Both of us. Equal - we are equal," he laughed. "Give her love every day I think is the most romantic.' Madonna and Brahim met in September 2010, just a few weeks after the singer split from her previous toyboy Jesus Luz, who was 28 years her junior. And the star apparently wished Brahim 'good luck' on his modelling stint. 'I've been a dancer all my life but now I'll try modelling why not?' he said, adding that he was not at all nervous about the show. 'It's just walking so I don't know why to be nervous. If it was a show and learning stuff okay, but it's just walking so I'm happy.'

Adele Grammy Awards crasher speaks out

Grammy Award winner Adele's acceptance of her award on Sunday evening at the Grammy's in Los Angeles got rudely interrupted by Ukrainian TV journalist Vitalii Sediuk, who now claims that he is not "a crazy guy". Sediuk, who was slapped by Will Smith on the Men In Black 3 Moscow red carpet last year after kissing the star, told The Hollywood Reporter that he got a ticket for the ceremony from friends after his channel failed to get accreditation. "My purpose was not get a seat and enjoy the view and enjoy the singers. Actually, I'm a reporter and it was part of my report," said Sediuk. "I've interviewed many A-list, so it's not like, 'Oh my gosh, I'm here'. I was quite excited because next to me was Sting, Justin Timberlake, Beyoncé... it's a really cool experience, yeah?" He added: "The idea to come on the stage was last minute - last second. Grammy Awards 2013: Adele accepts a Grammy for 'Set Fire to the Rain'. "When I heard Adele - to be honest Adele is my favourite singer. I know all of her songs - like 'Set Fire To The Rain' - everything. "I had this idea to go on stage and say what I sad... I pretended the award was for me!" Sediuk said: "My purpose is to entertain and to show a different emotion of celebrities. I'm not a crazy guy. I just think differently." Sediuk was arrested and spent the night in a jail cell. He was released yesterday (February 11) after being charged with trespassing and given a March court date.

Snoop Dogg's up in smoke pre-Grammy blunder

Snoop Dogg
With only a few hours to go before the 2013 Grammy Awards, rapper Snoop Dogg shocked fans at a pre-Grammy Awards event on Saturday when a lit up a marijuana cigarette. The rapper attended BMI's annual How I Wrote That Song event before the Grammy Awards tonight, reports music-news.com. The Associated Press reports the discussion turned to Dr. Dre's 1992 album The Chronic when Snoop started blazing on stage at The Roxy in Los Angeles. The rapper features on several tracks on the record. According to the outlet, Snoop was seen 'lighting up a large, Kush-filled blunt' and passed it to fellow rapper B.o.B. Lyricist Busta Rhymes and songwriters Luke Laird and Evan Bogart were also on stage during the panel discussion. The musicians abstained from Snoop's offer to smoke with him during the 15-minute session. Snoop has been candid about his love of smoking pot but it's also got him into legal trouble. The 41-year-old hip-hop star was arrested last June at a Norway airport after he was found carrying marijuana and more cash than legally permitted without declaration, TMZ reported. Police allegedly found eight grams of the drug on the hip-hop star after a sniffer dog at the Kjevik Airport in Kristiansand alerted them. According to the outlet, Snoop was fined $1980.13 for the drugs offences and paid $8,600 in total for the cash he was carrying. He was previously detained in January 2012 after several cigarettes containing the substance were found in his tour bus while he was in Texas. He has faced similar arrests over the years, receiving a suspended 30-day jail sentence in 2002 for misdemeanour marijuana possession. Snoop has not commented on the most recent incident. The Grammy Awards will be aired live on Channel O (DStv channel 320) at 03:00 Monday morning.

DJ Plastikman in action
Elector wizard Richie Hawtin, better known to electro dance music fans as Plastikman, is heading to South Africa! Hawtin will join local icon Black Coffee at electronic music workshops and master classes at the Guga S’thebe Arts & Cultural Centre in Langa, Cape Town, on Thursday, February 14 and at the Kliptown Youth Centre in Soweto on Saturday, February 16. REVIEW! Red Hot Chili Peppers in Cape Town

Crazy. Insane. Spectacular. Madness. Wow! 5 Words that I can think of to describe the Red Hot Chili Pepper’s concert on Tuesday 5 February 2013 at Cape Town Stadium, South Africa. It was their first ever tour of the country and last leg of their 2 shows in South Africa. Capetonians showed up in mass to support the Chili’s and the 55 000+ strong crowd weren’t disappointed. But let’s start from the top. Supporting act came in the format of zef-rappers Die Antwoord. For those who have never seen these guys live before – shame on you! They Rock with a BEAT. They might come across as disturbing, yes, but they give ‘normal’ people an inside look at what happens in the wrong side of town. From their razor sharp swearing to their amazing ghetto art images (explicit male and female genitalia wrapped up in obscure images – I like to call it white trailer-trash art-nuvo) that flashed on the big screens and the thumping hypnotic beats –  they had the crowd in their sweaty grip.
Die Antwoord's Wat Pomp Julle
Things got really crazy when Beastie Boys member Mike D joined Die Antwoord’s Ninja and Yo-Landi Vi$$er with Red Hot Chili’s bassist Flea to do an awesome version of the Beastie’s So What’cha Want. I overheard afterwards a colleague of mine in the office saying that the “part where Yo-Landi ripped the heart out of a dove, was quite upsetting”. It wasn’t a dove you nincompoop! It was her own heart she ripped out of her chest for their music video I Fink U Freeky. They ended their set with the appearance of Casper The Friendly ghost, who apparently was very friendly as he was holding his dick in his hands.
Red Hot Chili time in Cape Town
Next up it was the Chili’s. Freaking awesome! They played a mixed bag of old and new hits and even going back to songs they recorded 30 years ago. Amen! Flea did most of the chatting to the audience with lead singer Anthony Kiedis sweeping up the crowd into a frenzy with their hits By The Way, Monarchy Roses, Under The Bridge, Californication, and Give It Away. The stage lay-out was simple, yet effective. The backdrop saw various images and video clips for certain songs while two huge screens flagged the stage on both sides. I think the band was quite surprised by the strong following they have in South Africa – especially seeing Anthony’s surprise look on his face when the audience sang every word for each song at the top of their voices. It was an insane hot rocking concert that kicked off the music year to a great start. Watch a video clip of the show, HERE! Next up is Metallica in April. Hope to see you there! (PS – To the drunk dimwit with the hat and fake sunglasses and Satan shaped face and beard – I saw your grab you girlfriend by the throat as the audience left the stadium. Shame on you! Sies man! Hope she kicks your ass back to wherever scruffy little place you came from…)

Waar was jy oral? Ek was vir 3 weke in Europa.
Enige sneeumanne gebou? Ek was 2 dae in Switzerland, Engelberg.
Ja, dit was my eerste keer.
Die show in Nederland was n groot voorreg.
Willem in Parys
En die laagtepunt? Ek was bietjie teleurgesteld oor hoe ongeskik die mense in Parys was. Ek dink net dis omdat Suid-Afrika se mense altyd so vriendelik is, dat jy verwag dit orals so gaan wees.
My eie huis, my familie en vriende.
Wat beplan Willem alles vir 2013? 2013 is n baie besige jaar vol shows.
Enige TV-shows/movies in die pyplyn? Ek het my eie radio show gekry op Rippel 90.5 in Pretoria, Maandag tot Donderdag so 17:45, waaroor ek baie opgewonde is.
