Michael Jackson’s Journey From Motown To Off The Wall

During Black History Month, the Estate of Michael Jackson and Sony Music’s Legacy Recordings will release exclusive CD/DVD and CD/Blu-ray editions of the critically acclaimed new documentary MICHAEL JACKSON’s Journey From Motown To Off The Wall, directed by Spike Lee, bundled with the revolutionary 1979 album. The documentary made its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 24, 2016, and its broadcast premiere on SHOWTIME® on Friday, February 5th at 9 P.M. ET/PT on-air, on demand and over the internet. Starting February 26, it will be broadcast in territories around the world.

THE ALBUM – The importance of Michael Jackson’s Off the Wall cannot be overstated. Recorded when he was just 20-years-old, the album heralded Michael’s stunning emancipation as a singular musical force and creative visionary. It smashed the ceiling on record sales for black artists, ushering in an exciting new era of R&B-to-pop crossover airplay, chart, marketing and sales trends not seen before in modern pop music. It’s the record that “invented modern pop as we know it,” wrote Rolling Stone. For fellow black artists of the day, Michael served as an illuminating inspiration.

To Black America, Off The Wall transcended music and entertainment altogether. The success of the album marked a level of national and international achievement that conjured pride in a culture that as late as the end of the 1970s was still fighting for the kind of social acceptance that Michael’s album received. Because of Off the Wall’s indelible influence, 21st century artists as disparate as Beyoncé, Pharrell, Kendrick Lamar and The Weeknd all have a blueprint they turned to for creating their own version of superstardom.

Written by Michael Jackson, the first single from Off The Wall, “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough,” was Michael’s first Grammy and first single to hit No. 1 in the U.S. and internationally as a solo artist. With the singles “Rock With You,” “Off the Wall” and “She’s Out of My Life,” Jackson became the first solo artist in history to have four singles from the same album peak inside the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100. The album was an enormous commercial success; as of 2014 it is certified eight times platinum in the United States and has sold more than 30 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling albums of all time.

The Music:  “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough”; “Rock With You”; “Workin’ Day and Night”; “Get on the Floor”; “Off the Wall”; “Girlfriend”; “She’s Out of My Life”;  “I Can’t Help It”; “ It’s the Falling in Love”; “Burn This Disco Out.”

THE DOCUMENTARY   Produced by Spike Lee, John Branca and John McClain.  For MICHAEL JACKSON’s Journey from Motown To Off The Wall, director Spike Lee assembles a wealth of archival footage, including material from Michael’s personal archive, interviews with contemporary talents and family members, and Michael’s own words and image to create this insightful chronicle from the star’s early rise to fame through the release of this seminal album. A look at a chapter of his career that is rarely examined, MICHAEL JACKSON’s Journey From Motown To Off The Wall allows audiences to travel with Michael as he gets his start at Motown, strikes a new path with CBS Records, and forges a relationship with legendary producer Quincy Jones. An illuminated portrait emerges of how an earnest, passionate, hard-working boy becomes the “King of Pop.”

Partial list of interviews:  Lee Daniels; The Weeknd; Pharrell Williams; Misty Copeland; Kobe Bryant; Mark Ronson; John Legend; Questlove; Katherine Jackson; Joe Jackson; Marlon Jackson; Jackie Jackie;  L.A. Reid and more.

INDUSTRY NEWS! Sony Music Entertainment Grows Presence In Africa

Sony Music Entertainment announced it is expanding its operational presence across Africa as part of a long-term strategy to open offices in a number of key markets in the region.

The company has opened an office in Lagos, Nigeria to serve as the new hub of its on-the-ground operations in West Africa, and has named music business entrepreneur Michael Ugwu General Manager for the West African region. It also recently began the process of registering to do business in Nairobi, Kenya, which will anchor the Sony Music's physical operations in East Africa.

In connection with the opening of operations in Lagos, Sony Music recently signed Nigerian superstar Davido to a worldwide deal. In East Africa, SME has partnered with local artists in the region as well, recently signing Redsan amongst others.

These moves build upon Sony Music's existing business initiatives in Africa, where the company is already a market leader. Sony Music has long had offices in South Africa, in both Johannesburg and Cape Town, and throughout the continent, Sony Music earns revenue from partners including Vevo, YouTube, Apple Music and iTunes. In addition, in West Africa, music content is currently available through MTN Nigeria's service via IMI, and in East Africa it currently conducts trade with Kenya's largest mobile network operator, Safaricom, a company that boasts in excess of 10 million CRBT subscribers.

"Expansion in Africa has been part of our strategy for several years," said Adam Granite, President, Northern & Eastern Europe and Africa, Sony Music International. "As the region continues to grow, we see significant opportunities to market the incredible local talent in Africa to the rest of the world as well as import our repertoire and exploit it on emerging digital platforms."

Said Sean Watson, Managing Director of Sony Music Entertainment Africa, "We are really keen to partner with African artists to deliver local, African and global success stories. With over 800 million people living in Sub Saharan Africa, the African continent is a market with huge potential for local artists wanting to expand their horizons."

WILLEM SAMUEL: Releases a collection of exquisite love songs - Langafstand (Long-Distance)

South African Illustrator, painter and musician, Willem Samuel, is currently in the country waiting to have is UK visa renewed. He stretches his stay to its fullest potential by releasing his collection of exquisite love songs, Langafstand (Long-Distance). Langafstand is accompanied by a beautiful booklet of illustrations and lyrics which features art from Willem's graphic novel Mengelmoes, which also launches this month, 25 February, at The Book Lounge in Cape Town!

Meet Willem Samuel. He’s a comic book artist, painter and songwriter currently based in London away from his native South Africa. After being in various punk and indie bands since the 90s, he has now debuted his first solo EP that is a reflection on being physically and/or emotionally away from a loved one that’s appropriately titled Langafstand (Afrikaans for Long-Distance). Langafstand is an EP with love songs written and sung in Afrikaans, yet the core emotions can still be felt universally. These acoustic tracks aren’t the typical ones sung at coffee shops, there are some experimental elements with electric guitars, cajons, and melodicas thrown in amongst other ambient instrumental voices. Willem’s musicianship can bring to mind a mix of Denison Witmer, Iron and Wine, and Bill Callahan albeit with a style on his own.

The EP starts out with the song “Mis Jou” (Miss You) which is a somber number about longing for that special someone. “Tweedimensional” (Two-Dimensional) is a slowly building song that uses a cajon as percussion midway through and the melody is anchored by a subtle bass line that keeps it going. “Die Voorstel” (The Proposal) is an urgent and upbeat track that details a proposal, finding mutual instruments, and wanting to start a family in that order with some synchronicity in those topics. The fast tempo has a bit of a folk punk edge that is reminiscent of Chuck Ragan’s solo work. There’s the slowcore ballad “Snare” (Strings) that is a gentle song that invokes imagery of comparing and contrasting a lover’s embrace being better than holding a prized well-strung guitar. “Waardevol” (Precious) has clean electric guitar lines interweaving with the acoustic dreamy sound in this piece. The last song “Sonskyn” (Sunshine) is a lo-fi downtempo song that evokes some of the aesthetics of Sun Kil Moon with a bit of American Wolf’s earlier material thrown in. It has an unpolished, yet truly honest aesthetic that is a fitting closer to Langafstand.

This multitalented artist is able to make the yearnings of being in that long-distance relationship seem a bit better after releasing his debut solo EP. The strength of these songs was enough to make this a solid entry in the folk genre for 2016.

Slow Jack debut single ‘Love to Dream’ available for free download and live studio video released

New Cape Town band Slow Jack has caught the attention of music lovers and media at the annual Up the Creek Music Festival near Swellendam in January. It was their second gig as a band and they filled a main stage slot on the Saturday of the festival with fresh, catchy tunes and exuberant charm. Their debut single ‘Love to Dream’ was released to national radio in January and is now available for FREE DOWNLOAD here: http://www.slowjackmusic.com/ (until 20 March.)

The band also filmed and recorded a live version of 'Love To Dream’. Watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0mtaZDec1NA

The members of Slow Jack are: Hannes Muller (vocals and guitar), Jayme van Tonder (vocals and violin), Jeandre Schultz (lead guitar), Andre van der Merwe (bass) and Adrian Fowler (Drums.)

‘Love to Dream’ is a story that people can relate to and was stringed out by Hannes and Jayme early one Saturday morning in Sea Point. Each band member then contributed something notable to the final architecture and unique sound of the song during rehearsals.

Muller comments on the making of the single: “Writing is emotional for us. The experience sets the mood; the lyrics tell the story and what follows sets the scene. Although the initial songwriting may take only a few minutes, it is the refinement that take hours or even days. All in all hard work, but we have a lot of fun while doing it.”

The idea of a live studio video was born soon after the song was recorded. Muller adds: “Whilst people do dream in colour, we decided to shoot the video in ‘black and white’ as we felt it would reflect the mood of the song so much better.”

JUSTIN SERRAO releases a steamy music video for 'Not Fighting'

Justin Serrao’s steamy new music video for Not Fighting is out now. Not Fighting is a Country Pop song that Justin was inspired to write from influences he gained when he spent time in Nashville, Tennessee last year. On making the music video, Justin had the following to add, “It was an interesting shoot! Having Michelle play ‘Chopstix’, topless on the piano…” Through the use of contrasting monotone and full colour scenes, music video director, D.O.P. and editor, Charl Fraser tastefully depicted the track’s deeper meaning in this video. He illustrated the story of a lost lover (Actress - Michelle Chrystal Longman) and the tragedy of regret that inspired Justin to write Not Fighting. Justin’s future schedule is also filled with exciting events and news. Justin hints that the finishing touches are being done on his highly-anticipated EP that will feature the best in hot rock-country flavour, a cool collaboration with one of his favourite bands, CrashCarBurn as well as pre-production on his brand new television show which is set to kick off at the end of 2016.Watch the video HERE.

Upcoming shows:

26 February - Clarens Beerfest, RSA
27 February - Clarens Beerfest, RSA

Justin Bieber's Sorry gets a local spin thanks to singer Loki Rothman

Loki Rothman has given a local flavour to the Justin Bieber’s hit, Sorry. He released a stylish #OneManBand video cover of the song. Apart from his original offerings in the form of his debut album, The Way Back, and his instrumental DVD, Syndactyly, Loki started to release a selection of #OneManBand covers in 2015.  Sorry is the fourth in this particular series.

Why Loki chose this song:

“I think all the new Justin Bieber tracks are cool.  The whole of the new album is done so well.  “Sorry” is the one single on the album that really ‘sat’ with me the most.  The percussive elements used in the original version drew me in to try and copy it on an acoustic guitar.  I haven’t found a legit cover of this tune on YouTube, so I thought I’d give it a go.”

These #OneManBand covers are showcases of Loki’s revered guitar skills and magnificent voice, but also serves as a representation of what to expect at his popular live shows and where he is headed with his original work.

What’s up for Loki in 2016:

Loki is full of plans for 2016.  He will release new original singles including collaborations with Pierre Greeff (Die Heuwels Fantasties) and Albert Frost, amongst others.  Loki and Albert are planning to tour together in May 2016.  Details will be announced soon.

Roxette rocks Cape Town once again - Roxette stenar Kapstaden gång

30 years later and Roxette can still deliver the goods. It's Monday 8 February in a packed GrandArena, Cape Town (South Africa) and the excitement in the air is contagious. People came out in their droves to see one of the most loved acts performing in South Africa again. I'm at the last show of their short South African tour. As soon as the house lights went down, the stage exploded and the audience were clapping and singing along. The band were zoom mode as they jumped from one hit to another, catering to all fans and their favourite songs. "Hello you fool, I love" drove the audience wild as well as Crash, Boom Bang, Fading Like A Flower, Spending My Time, and my favourite, It Must Have Been Love. The audience did everything Per Gessle told them to do and Marie Fredriksson still charmed fans with her angel voice. And talking about Marie...It would be wrong not to mention her health. She looked so frail on stage in her pure angelic white outfit. She was seated the whole show through and was helped onto stage and off. I felt sorry for her. You could see she wanted to move, wanted to walk on the stage and walked to the fans, but here she is, sitting in a chair. But that didn't stopped her from blowing us away. As frail as she is, she has a powerful voice that give you the chills. I felt like a teenager again when I heard Roxette and their magic music for the first time. It was a magic evening. The perfect start to the week.

Zebra & Giraffe back with hot new song!

"Won't Break Down" is the 2nd single from Zebra & Giraffe's new EP "Slow Motion". It follows the Top 10 single "It's All The Same" and was recorded in Stinson Beach, California and produced by Cian Riordan. As with the 1st single, "Won't Break Down" continues down a more positive path lyrically as the band explores a more Pop-Rock orientated sound. Lead singer Greg Carlin says of the lyrics: “Between the verses and chorus of ‘Won’t Break Down’, I wanted to create a contrast between the desperate and juvenile kind of love I was yearning for when I was 17, and the more mature and balanced love I have now. I guess it’s kind of like a coming of age, but one that took almost 15 years!” The music video for the track was filmed by the band during their time in California. It features behind the scenes action from the recording of their EP at the beautiful and unique Panoramic House - a one in a kind landmark built in the 1960's by a local teacher and his family. The house is built entirely out of recycled building materials salvaged from the great San Francisco Bay area. The current owners of the house carefully upgraded it in 2013 and it now includes a world-class recording studio!
