Die Heuwels Fantasties teams up with Mandoza

Local rockers Die Heuwels Fantasties has teamed up with South African kwaito musician Mandoza for their song, Afrikaan, from their deluxe package which contains an EP with five brand new tracks, the Alles wat Mal is album and the Live op Paul Cluver DVD.“Mandoza is an absolute legend in this industry. His music resonates with young and old.  It is the first time that Mandoza collaborates with Afrikaans artists, so this song is unique”, says Pierre Greeff, lead singer of Die Heuwels Fantasties. According to Pierre the song conveys the sentiment that “although we can sometimes feel alienated in our circumstances, there is still a  feeling of unity amongst many South Africans; no matter what your background is.” Hou Aan (Hold On) is the first single and music video from Wens jy was hier. 187 Pictures and Die Heuwels Fantasties teamed up once again to present this visual masterpiece.Nicol Dippenaar is Director of Photography and the video was filmed in Graaff-Reinet.

DVD REVIEW! Madonna - MDNA World Tour

It is sad that Madonna fans in South Africa actually never had the chance of seeing the pop icon performing here - ever. So, the next best thing Madge fans can look forward to is her MDNA World Tour DVD. Although there was initial complaints the sound quality and some visual quality was of a substandard, the copy I got my hands on was good. As expected, Madonna delivers a show of note. The visuals, music and dancers will have your glued to the screen. What impressed me most about the show was how she mash certain songs with older hits and even include Lady Gaga's Born This Way in her song, Express Yourself. The only downside of this DVD is that she didn't include all the big hits as I would have like to hear. Revolver is one of those songs that could have been left out - it's not that of a big hit for her. The same goes for Erotic Candy Shop. A mash-up that could have been left off the set list. The true gems on here are the songs I'm Addicted, I'm A Sinner and the remix version of Give Me All Your Luvin'. And of course Madonna speaks her mind and is controversial as usual, and her visuals also had tongues wagging. But,it didn't put me off, I love the show, just a pity we never got a chance to see it in South Africa...The DVD also includes a documentary, MDNA Workshop.

CD REVIEW! Keane - The Best Of Keane

11 million albums. 10 years. 5 number one albums. The Best of Keane in 20 songs. The album features 18 fan favourites, plucked from the band’s five consecutive UK Number One albums, alongside two powerful new songs, ‘Higher Than The Sun’ and ‘Won’t Be Broken’. My first introduction to the band was the song Everybody's Changing, Bedshaped and Is It Any Wonder? It was kick-ass songs! Lead singer Tom Chaplin says, “It’s over a decade ago that we were busy making our first record’ Hopes & Fears’. Having got together in the mid-90s, things took a while to get going for us as a band, but once they did, it became an incredible ride! We've had 5 consecutive number 1 albums, toured the world countless times and experienced some very heady days. We wanted to put something out there to mark this milestone, to say thank you to all our fans and to try and send you all on a journey through the songs which we're most proud of. Listening through this ‘Best Of’, I feel like we given a pretty good account of ourselves over the years. We hope you agree!” Yes, Tom, we agree.

3 HOT songs for your listening pleasure…

Amber Run – Heaven
Amber Run have been kicking around for a little while now, but they're starting to make a name for themselves and it's down to atmospheric songs like this. 'Heaven' is the kind of heartbreak anthem you're likely to start hearing on American TV shows as couples implode on-screen. With big guitar licks and dramatic percussion, it's ripe with more emotion than a frustrated teenager, but it manages to be uplifting rather than self-indulgent in one irresistible balancing act. They're also starting to pick up traction thanks to some support from BBC Radio 1 and Fearne Cotton, who both tip them for big things next year following the success of The 1975 and Kodaline.

R Kelly – Cookie (Clean)
R. Kelly  is set to release his highly anticipated 12th studio album BLACK PANTIES on 9 December. Combining sexual innuendos and witty word play on such tracks as “Cookie,” “Genius” and “Legs Shakin’,” Kelly harkens back to a style that has undoubtedly embedded him into the fabric of contemporary R&B music over the past two decades.  Black Panties also includes the hood anthem “Right Back,” a sensual duet with Kelly Rowland “All The Way,” and surefire club hit “Spend That,” featuring Jeezy.  Other guest appearances include Ludacris, 2 Chainz, Migos and Juicy J. The standard version of Black Panties is packed with 12 tracks, while the deluxe version will include 4 additional tracks. Since the 1993 release of his debut album 12 Play, no other artist has possessed the musical versatility quite like R. Kelly, evident by chart-topping hits that range from “Bump N’ Grind” and “Your Body’s Calling” to Grammy Award winning “I Believe I Can Fly” and everything in between.   In addition to recent collaborations with Lady Gaga (“Do What U Want”), Justin Bieber (“PYD”) and Bruno Mars (“Gorilla” remix),  R. Kelly has scored hit songs for Michael Jackson (“You Are Not Alone”), Celine Dion (“I’m Your Angel”), Maxwell (“Fortunate”) and countless others. Named #1 on Vibe Magazine’s list of “20 Greatest Musical Geniuses Since ’93,” R. Kelly has sold more than 40 million albums worldwide, has won 3 Grammy Awards (24 nominations), 6 American Music Awards, 6 Billboard Awards, 8 Soul Train Awards and 3 NAACP Image Awards.

Santana ft. Juanes – La Flaca
Rock icon and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, Carlos Santana will release a star-studded album project CORAZÓN early 2014.  Superstar performances on the forthcoming album include Lila Downs (Mexico), Ziggy Marley (Jamaica), and Romeo Santos (Dominican Republic). The first single from Santana’s forthcoming album entitled “La Flaca” featuring multi-platinum recording artist Juanes, was unveiled this week at a Latin GRAMMY Awards ® press conference in Las Vegas at the House of Blues at the Mandalay Bay Hotel & Casino. “CORAZÓN, LIVE FROM MEXICO: LIVE IT TO BELIEVE IT” concert event in Guadalajara, Mexico (in Santana’s native state of Jalisco) will be held on December 14th at the Vicente Fernandez Arena, with a star-studded cast of musicians, all celebrating their Latin music heritage. Confirmed celebrity performances at the concert include Chocquibtown, Gloria Estefan, Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, Juanes, Miguel, Niña Pastori, Samuel Rosa of Skank, Salvador Santana, Soledad, Diego Torres, among others. Many genres of Latin music are represented in these collaborations including pop, rock, salsa, hip-hop, folk, reggae, traditional and bachata.  Santana is currently in the studio in Las Vegas recording many of these

Lady Gaga claims her boyfriend is also "strange"

If you thought Applause singe Lady Gaga might be a bit, how shall we put it...weird, then here is another interesting little fact, the singe says her boyfriend Taylor Kinney is a "secret weirdo". The pop star has been dating the Chicago Fire actor since they met on the set of her 2011 music video for You & I. Mother Monster told American talk show host Ellen DeGeneres in an interview scheduled to air on Monday that Taylor is a a "hidden weirdo." She explained that "he is extremely strange actually and we complement each other's weirdness. That's actually one of the first things he ever said to me. It's a Dr. Seuss quote that you find in someone else a compatible weirdness. And it was one of the first things he's said to me." The star remembers the first time the pair met. She was wearing a ridiculous costume and is still stumped as to why Taylor was attracted to her. "We were filming this scene where he's electrocuting me to bring me back to life to the woman that he once loved. I've got these pins sticking out of my head and I'm wearing cork and I got no hair and I'm bald. Why he found me attractive just completely behooves me," she laughed. She was stunned when their chemistry sparked on set. Taylor surprised her with a kiss and that was the start of their romance. Two years later, she says they're "best friends".

"Oh yeah, all over the place," Adam said. "Going to be the butt of every joke for the next six months, to a year to my entire life." Despite all the teasing he is receiving, The Voice judge says he wouldn't mind sporting a tiara if it was "Diamond-encrusted, like something CeeLo would wear'. Adam brushes off being made fun of because the Sexiest Man Alive award is a huge honour. "No, it's flattering," Adam insisted. "It's funny, it's awesome, it's a huge part [of pop culture]...You know, it's an iconic thing. It's amazing... It's just, it is funny, it is definitely funny. It's flattering and hilarious."

CD REVIEW! Celine Dion – Loved Me Back To Life

With more than 200 million albums sold worldwide, superstar, mom and wife Celine Dion’s brand new English album Loved Me Back To Life has reportedly already sold more than 100 000 copies – only in Canada folks. Now if that isn’t impressive, I don’t know what is. Although fans had to wait six years for a new English album, the diva wasn’t sitting with folded hands. The star’s second contract engagement at The Colosseum at Ceasar’s Palace titled Celine, is currently in its second year, she was on the road with her year and a half world tour Taking Chances and gave birth to twins. After an incredibly successful career of more than 30 years Celine sounds different – in a very good way of course. Her vocals are more relaxed, edgier than ever and she mentioned in numerous interviews after the album’s release she has nothing to prove anymore. She adores her job and fans, but priority is being a mom and wife. The album’s first five tracks, Loved Me Back to Life (http://goo.gl/7ymtkM), Somebody Loves Somebody (http://goo.gl/jxcdIT), Incredible (duet with Ne-Yo, yes Ne-Yo, http://goo.gl/IGF62x), Water and a Flame and Breakaway will undoubtedly result in big singles and sales. Stevie Wonder joins Celine for the albums ninth track, Overjoyed. Cheesy, but I will have my first dance as a married man to this stunning song come hell or high water. And do listen to Unfinished Songs written by Diane Warren written for the movie Song for Marion. Deeply intimate, Celine takes us back to her “difficult” school years (http://goo.gl/UExvJf) with At Seventeen (originally by Janis Ian in 1975). At 45 Celine is a well-oiled superstar, relaxed in her own skin and her exceptional voice is testament of grateful maturity and years of experience in the studio and on stage. It’s clear that Celine now approach her music a lot differently, referring to her thank you letter in the album’s booklet: “Thank you . . . Is what I say in the morning when I wake up and think about René and my beloved sons, René-Charles, Nelson, and Eddy, and my mother, who is always with me and always so inspiring, and my brothers and sisters and those I love, who make my life more beautiful, far from the lights, and the illusions and all the artificial things that are out there.” (By Arnold Ras)

Local 'Love Can' rocker Shaun Jacobs talks about how he and his band got the scoop of a lifetime as opening act for Nickelback

For Shaun Jacobs and his band it was the scoop and the dream of a lifetime - being the opening act for Canadian rockers Nickelback on their first South African tour. The Beat caught up with Shaun as he and the band are getting ready for this unique experience and tells us what his favourite Nickelback songs are. . .

Wow! Nickelback? How do you feel about opening for them? Wow indeed! We are blown away by the thought of it - still pinching ourselves to the fact that it is actually happening. We are so excited, and so grateful for the opportunity.

What can fans expect from your performance at the shows? The main thing we want to make sure of is that we enjoy ourselves. Playing live together as a band is such a thrill, and this is just the best "gig" we've ever had. We're going to play the best we've ever played while having as much fun as we've ever had!

So, how did you get the scoop on opening for them? Kim Saville was brought in by Electromode to do some PR work for me. She immediately sent my album to Attie at Big Concerts who really liked it, and in turn sent it to Nickelback themselves. Once they had given the nod, it was all systems go.

What went through your mind when you got the news? A month before it was all confirmed I got an email from Kim saying that she would be working on my PR, and that by the way I've been put forward to Nickelback to open for them. I was obvioulsy excited in a "wow, imagine if that were to actually happen" kind of way, but I didn't really think it would - once you've been in the industry a while you've had enough let downs for reality to dampen dreaming to some degree, so this seemed like a nice dream you know.....? As the month went by it started looking more and more likely, until eventually before going onto stage at a club I got a message saying that one of the members (Chad) had approved, and they were now just waiting on the other three. As a band we were like "That's cool, we'll believe it when we see it" kind of thing. The next morning I got a call from Kim saying that it was officially happening!! It still feels surreal...!

Who was the first person you told when you heard the news? My wife was in the room with me when I got the call, and I didn't need to say anything to her, she could see straight away by my reaction what the news was

How nervous are you for the gigs? We're not really nervous, we're just really excited. We feel ready for this as a band - we've never enjoyed playing music so much before; we've got a great chemistry together as musicians and as friends and we feel confident in our performance - we feel like we're up to it. That being said, we've never played anything that scale before so I have no idea how we're going to feel on the first night, which is why we just want to focus on enjoying the opportunity!

What has been the biggest gig/crowd you have played for as the crowds at the Nickelback shows are sure to be quite massive? Biggest crowd I have played to is about 2500 people, so this is going to be a big step up. I've always wanted to play in the Dome, and always used to say to friends when we drove past it "Imagine playing there one day". Now it's actually happening!

Do you have any little rituals/things your do before going on stage? I always do a fairly extensive vocal warm up, and Andrew and Craig usually play around with harmonies to my warm ups - sounds quite cool sometimes. Then we'll run one or two choruses vocally to make sure we're in sync and ready to go, and then we'll make a point of setting any technical concerns or anything like that aside in our minds and just going out and enjoying the gig and enjoying spending an evening with the fans.

What is your favourite Nickelback song? Hard to leave "How you remind me" out of the favourites, I mean it's just a great song - it put them on the map for a reason. I also love "Gotta be Somebody" - I love the simplicity of the melody, yet with the songs natural energy I find it really hooky.

Besides opening for Nickelback, what have you been up to lately? The main thing I've been working on is the live presentation with the band as it's hard to focus on that when you're working on an album in studio. We're looking to play as much as possible now - good to be back on the stage again having got the Love Can album finished and out there!

Any new music in the works? I have actually deliberately been withholding myself from writing music for a period after finishing the album just to let the creativity build beneath the surface, and to get a fresh perspective so that when I start up again I progress from where I finished with the Love Can album and don't just stay in the same musical box. It's already paying off - there are some great ideas pushing through to the surface, and some great show ideas we have been playing around with in the rehearsal room as a band. I am always trying to improve as a songwriter, and as a band we are always trying to stretch ourselves with what we can incorporate into the live sets - I know there is a LOT more to come.....

Rihanna still get pre-show jitters

She's the queen of the stage and uber cool when she performs, but it seems that the Diamonds singer Rihanna still get the jitters before a show. Singer/songwriter Mikky Ekko wrote the song Stay for Rihanna's Unapologetic album. Mikky and Rihanna performed the song as a duet at the Grammys in February, and according to Mikky the singer still gets pre-performance jitters. "She walked over to me right before the curtains went up and she said, 'I'm so nervous.' And that, for me, was one of the most calming [things],' Mikky told MTV News. 'It made me feel like... [OK], it's totally natural. It reminded me of being in high school at a talent show... except it was a world stage." Who would have guessed it....

HOT! Billie Joe + Norah - Foreverly

Green Day front man Billie Joe Armstrong and singer and songwriter Norah Jones have teamed up to record Foreverly, an unforgettable 12-song collection inspired by Songs Our Daddy Taught Us, an album of traditional Americana songs reinterpreted, recorded, and released by The Everly Brothers in 1958. Recorded in nine days, Foreverly, captures the beauty of the Everly's stunning close harmonies to create a moving powerful testament to these rootsy ballads. Jones and Armstrong reinterpret several traditional songs, including “Roving Gambler,” “Down In The Willow Garden,” “Long Time Gone,” “Who’s Gonna Shoe Your Pretty Little Feet?,” and “Barbara Allen,” as well as country tunes like “That Silver Haired Daddy of Mine” (written by Gene Autry and Jimmy Long) and Karl Davis’ “Kentucky.” “I’ve been a big fan of The Everly Brothers since I was a little boy,” Armstrong says. “A couple of years ago, I discovered Songs Our Daddy Taught Us for the first time, and I fell in love with it. I was playing it every day and thought it would be a cool idea to re-do the record, but with a female singer. I thought of Norah because she can sing anything, from rock to jazz to blues, and I knew her harmonies would be amazing. I thought the songs would take on a different meaning working with her, and she has a really good ear for arrangements. I was mainly intrigued by these old traditionals, country songs, and hymns. When we were done with the album, Norah looked at me and said, ‘I bet you didn’t think you were going to make a country record, huh?’” Armstrong and his engineer, Chris Dugan, travelled to New York to record with Jones at The Magic Shop in Manhattan with two of Jones’ favourite musicians, bassist Tim Luntzel and drummer Dan Rieser. Armstrong and Jones played guitar and piano. Charlie Burnham on fiddle and Johnny Lam on pedal steel guitar rounded out the band. “It was super fun and experimental,” Jones says. "I loved that the original was completely stripped down and a little more obscure.  There was a lot of room to interpret the songs in our own way.”

3 hot tracks you just have to hear

Britney Spears – Perfume

After Britney Spears commanded her millions of followers to work, bitch on her first "Britney Jean" single, the pop superstar has spritzed the gliding mid-tempo ballad "Perfume" as the second offering from her eighth studio album. Produced by Will.i.am and co-written by Spears and Sia, "Perfume" allows Spears to momentarily discard the confident exterior of "Work Bitch" and express vulnerability over "paranoid" feelings about her romantic interest. "'Perfume' is incredibly special to me because it hits close to home, and I think the story is relatable to everyone," Spears told E! about the new track. "Everyone's been through an insecure moment in a relationship that's left them vulnerable and I think this song captures that."

HOT STAR OF THE WEEK! Lorde - Pure Heroine

No longer the best kept secret, the world has wised up to the talents of Lorde in a whirlwind six months that would have significantly turned the head of most, but not Ella Yelich-O’Connor, Lorde's birth name. As much as the plaudits and achievements are piling up - #1 album and single in her native New Zealand, the first female artist to top the Billboard Alternative Chart in 17 years, taking Frank Ocean’s slot last minute at Australia’s Splendour In the Grass festival and killing it etc etc - you wouldn’t know it from the girl herself. With Royals, Tennis Court and The Love Club EP about to be backed up by her debut album Pure Heroine, listeners will finally get their first chance to fully immerse themselves in the extended work of an artist who has already managed to nail the ebullience, ennnui and constantly confounding nature of modern life in a way it seems almost everyone can relate to. Spurning the stereotypes of pouting pop princesses and vacuous marketing-sponge teens, Lorde turns a mirror to the monotony and the magnificence that surrounds her, articulating it with razor sharp intensity and some right regal rhetorical behaviour. Given a chance to develop her craft and find her feet, after being signed up by Universal three years ago, the musical stars aligned for her when she linked up with producer and co-writer Joel Little, who was able to assist in getting the songs out of her head and into the irrepressible earworms they have become.
Slipped out with zero fanfare and accompanied only by a simple illustration, The Love Club EP was released free to Soundcloud where it took on a life of its own, reaching out all over the globe and rapidly attracting interest from major industry players, and more importantly legions of folk simply struck and enchanted by a fresh voice in often stale times. Royals cemented the deal, spreading like a benevolent virus with its pin¬point musings on materialism, bling, brand worship, commercial fetishisation and all that 2013 stuff. A voracious music listener, Ella’s songs reflect an upbringing of quality soul, rock, folk and pop combined with the adventure and sonic wonderment of contemporary inspirations like James Blake, Burial, SBTRKT and Drake. However, when it all comes together, with her distinc¬tive multi-layered vocal arrangements and exacting sound design in the studio with Joel, it becomes a vivid, hyperreal magical thing that is considerably more than the sum of its parts.

Eminem considered duet with Dido for his new CD

In 2000 Eminem's CD The Marshall Mathers LP, featured a deut with Dido, called Stan. Olly Murs pays tribute to Robbie Williams

British singer Olly Murs has revealed the video for his new single ‘Hand on Heart’, which is released on November 24. The video is an homage to Robbie Williams’ video for ‘Angels’, and features a cameo by the man himself. Robbie said: “Imitation is the highest form of flattery. I am easily flattered, and I love Olly. We always have a good time together and this was no exception.” Olly said “I was really excited by the idea for this video and to get Rob involved was important to me. We had great fun filming it and I am so pleased it’s got his stamp of approval.”

REVIEW! Eminem - The Marshall Mathers LP 2

The Detroit rapper's eighth studio is nothing more than a superb piece of musical genius. It's return to his original rap roots with some heavy rocking beats and even a sprinkling of poppy sounds. As broadwayworld.com says, The Marshall Mathers LP 2, or MMLP 2, is a return to form for both Eminem and his alter ego. The album sees rap's favourite anti-hero making a triumphant return to the darkly comical world he introduced us to back in 1999, when he released The Slim Shady LP." The CD ha some serious strong songs that will be on repeated play on my CD player: Berzerk, Asshole (featuring Skylar Grey), The Monster (featuring Rihanna), Love Game (featuring Kendrick Lamar) and the true gem of this CD, Headlights (featuring Nate Ruess).

Next Taylor Swift CD will be "different"

Singer Taylor Swift is a busy girl! Besides popping into Cape Town, South Africa, to film a role for the movie The Giver and still promoting her latest CD, Red, the singer has now revealed the her next CD will have a "different sound" to red. She told Capital FM radio she has already "written a lot of songs for the next album." She said: "Now that I've written a lot of songs for the next album, I'm dying for people to hear it. It's so weird to be still promoting Red and I'm so proud of Red and I'm creating something that's so different from Red." Digital Spy reports that the singer explained that she is aware of the need to evolve her sound if she wants the next album to be a hit. "It's so cool because I'm so appreciative of the success of Red but I know that if I want to have success with something else I can't make 'Red 2.0'," she admitted. "I have to make something completely new and something that if you were to hear a song from it you'd go 'Oh that's not from Red, that's from the new one'. So that's what I'm doing."

Table Mountain Blues Summit 2013

The Table Mountain Blues Summit 2013 is happening at Hillcrest Quarry on  Friday 22 and Saturday 23 November. The Cream of South Africa's Blues- Rock Artists will be taking the stage. To celebrate and trace the roots of Blues in South Africa, the Blues Summit ran a competition in October to trace the history of Blues in South Africa. Blues Summit organiser Richard Pryor announced that the winner of the competition is Lisa Flack. “It was an inclusive and a well-researched report which made very interesting reading considering that there is not much on the history of Blues in SA out there. She also accounted her own very recent introduction to the Blues and is now an avid SA Blues supporter.” Lisa made special mention of some of the bands that kick-started the development of blues in SA in the sixties and the eighties: “Band O’ Gypsies, The Flaming Firestones, the Down and Out Blues, and the Blues Broers. Now in its 8th year with the continued help of main sponsor Combustion Technology and Paul Bothner Music, The Table Mountain Blues Summit has established itself as a top music festival and is ready to hit awesome and epic status in 2013. Featuring some of the finest blues artists in SA over the past 30 years, from the Blues Broers to the new bloods Natasha Meister and Crimson House Blues, the line-up for 2013 promises to move your mojo soul.Details about the Blues Summit at www.bluesfest.co.za

The Jonas Brothers treat fans to one last mini-album

As a farewell to fans, The Jonas Brothers wrote on their official Facebook page plans to release a mini-album. They wrote: "To Our Dear Friends and Fans Around the World It is with heavy hearts that we confirm that our time as the Jonas Brothers is over. This decision has not come lightly, and we know that many of you will be disappointed. The time has come for us to move forward on individual career paths. We have been a band of brothers for 10 years and are now choosing simply to be brothers. Going forward, you can expect exciting things from each of us, and we will of course continue to support each other in all things. We would like to say THANK YOU to everyone who has supported and inspired us through the years, and stood by us in this difficult decision. We feel and appreciate your love. Because you waited so long for new music, we want to honour our Team Jonas fan club members by giving you our final album. This digital-only album contains four new studio recordings that would have appeared on our V album (which will now go unreleased). In addition, we're including 10 live tracks that we feel capture the energy and excitement of this past summer's tour. "Details regarding delivery of this digital album to Team Jonas members will be issued shortly. We hope you enjoy this album as much as we've enjoyed performing for you over the last 10 years. It has been an amazing experience. You will always be the best fans in the world. Kevin, Joe & Nick" The 'Hey You' singers announced their split last week, saying the band was "over for now", and recently cancelled their North American tour due to a "deep rift".
