E.TV SOAP MUSIC! Rhythm City releases digital compilation album

The long-awaited Rhythm City soundtrack album will be launched on 1 of February 2015 in digital format. The e.tv soapie is set against the backdrop of the South African music industry, so it is fitting that most of the music that has been featured since the soapie started in 2007, be compiled into one sizzling and eclectic album. The compilation has 34 tracks that will be released globally on iTunes and other music platforms. The first track on the album was recently launched on the show, Ngiyabonga performed by Bongani who plays Bruno on the show. It also features selected tracks from the likes of Standard Bank Young Artist of The Year, Nduduzo Makhathini (10 songs), celebrated Kwai-Hop producer Gemini Major (10 songs), songbird Buhle Tonyela, Simon “Ghetto Child” Sibanda and many others. “The album is long overdue trial, especially if one considers the amount of talent Rhythm City has nurtured, exposed and given a platform over the years. This is a synergy between two entities that are local, original and relevant. We have ambition to expand these genres sampled on the show in 2015,” said Monde Twala, Managing Director for e.tv Channels Division. The album produced by Lalela Music, in co-ordination with Orchard distribution includes the new Rhythm City theme track and 12 specially selected tracks that have been played extensively on the soapie. The music captures the essence of what the soapie is about. Backed by some of South Africa’s most celebrated creative talent, the soapie is a blend of authentic South African stories that span the breadth of South Africa’s youth experience. One of the soapie's unique brand positioning is its ability to infuse real-life celebrities and musicians on the soapie, incorporating them in the storyline. “This is a special album and a groundbreaking move for television and digital media on the continent, because no TV show does albums like this anymore. Rhythm City supports African music and artists, both upcoming and established,” enthuses Kwelagobe Sekele, Music Supervisor at Rhythm City and member of folk group Kwani Experience,

Guy Buttery - The Gathering Fiction Tour - February 2015

Four different continents, performances in more than twelve countries, and a second South African Music Award – that’s how one of South Africa’s hardest working musicians spent his 2014. Guy Buttery has propelled his career far beyond the borders of his beloved South Africa. As an internationally recognized musician, this multi-instrumentalist enjoys invitations to play sell-out performances all over the globe. The USA, UK, Australia, France, Brazil, and Italy have all welcomed him back year after year. However, to brand Guy Buttery as one of South Africa’s musical phenoms would be an injustice. He has grown into so much more. His international role has surpassed merely playing shows to foreign audiences. It has evolved into one as an ambassador of South African music, inspiring people across the world with our homegrown style at the very heart of his talent and tenacity. Guy Buttery is our musical advocate for everything positive and beautiful about the place we call home. It’s no wonder he becomes so excited when asked about his tours throughout South Africa. He loves the unique experiences on his musical journey through our land. And this year is no different. 2015 has begun with the announcement of the ‘Gathering Fiction Tour’, which includes stops in every major city in SA with almost 20 concerts. When asked about the title Gathering Fiction, Guy explains, "Every tour over the last 14 years is fondly remembered, and quite often defined, by the stories from the road. The people, the accents, the calamities, the laughter, the technical melt-downs and the potholes." Guy continues to say, "The name identifies exactly what happens whilst travelling as a musician. These pieces of ‘raw material’ are spontaneously collected and somehow find their way into songs, on-stage anecdotes and most importantly into my everyday thought patterns. You always carry them with you. Considering the scale of this tour, I know it'll be one to remember with memories to share for years to come". Guy Buttery’s debut album in 2002, "When I Grow Up..." was nominated for ‘Best Instrumental’ and ‘Best Newcomer’ at the South African Music Awards (SAMA’s) making him the youngest nominee in the history of the event. He then went on to win a SAMA in 2010, for his album “Fox Hill Lane” and again in 2014, for his first live concert recording, “Live in KwaZulu”. He has also received other major National accolades including the “The Standard Bank Ovation Award‟ in 2010, 2012 and 2014 for his performances at the National Arts Festival. Guy was then invited to perform with the 52-piece KZN Philharmonic Orchestra, dubbed “Africa’s greatest ensemble” and was also voted “Top Live Show” by The Cape Times. The virtuoso's worldwide scope and recognition rose exponentially with a full international calendar after the release of his award winning album “Fox Hill Lane”. Guy was also invited to perform at the South African Music Awards where he was broadcast to an audience of over 4 million people in one of the country's most viewed television events. Guy then joined world-renowned guitar legends Preston Reed and Jon Gomm for a series of concerts with the touring event, ‘International Guitar Night’. The media cited him “as one of South Africa’s finest exponents of the acoustic guitar.” Expect high dynamics, deep grooves, delicate African inflections and mind-bending guitar playing of an entirely new order from Guy Buttery.

Awolnation to release new CD Run on 17 March

Awolnation have announced the release of their new studio album titled Run on March 17, the highly anticipated follow-up to their chart-topping debut Megalithic Symphony. AWOLNATION recently completed an official music video for “Hollow Moon (Bad Wolf)” that can now be viewed online at http://youtu.be/i2PsXT88UeU. An extensive U.S. summer tour will be announced shortly, including a stop at this year’s Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, and the band will soon begin performing at select Stateside festival shows after a brief European tour this spring. A current itinerary is listed below. Following a whirlwind two-year world tour in support of Megalithic Symphony, 2014 saw AWOLNATION withdraw into the depths of the California coastline to construct the sophomore effort. A culmination of the years following the release of the debut album, the 14-track Run was written, performed and produced entirely by musical architect Aaron Bruno.
The end result is a finely tuned musical masterwork that is at times, and all at once, sprawling, atmospheric, exuberant, earnest and refined with moments of a signature aggressive unease. “There is not one second on the record that hasn’t been thoughtfully placed,” said Bruno. “Every single element serves a purpose.” Standout songs alongside the first single “Hollow Moon (Bad Wolf)” include the cinematic “Jailbreak,” the soaring anthem “I Am,” the title track “Run,” the euphoric “Windows,” the painfully vulnerable “Headrest for My Soul,” and the atomic rebellion of “KOOKSEVERYWHERE!!!!” Released in 2011, the band’s gold-certified debut album Megalithic Symphony was an alternative music revelation that became an astonishing success resonating with fans around the world. The album holds a number of long-running Billboard chart positions including 146 weeks on the Independent Albums chart, 111 weeks on the Billboard Top 200, 105 weeks on the Top Rock Albums chart and has topped the Heatseekers Albums chart 8 separate times. Their hit single “Sail,” a redefining global anthem, is certified 6x platinum in the U.S. and is the second longest charting song in the Billboard Hot 100's 55-year history. It has amassed hundreds of millions of video views and streaming plays online, topping Billboard’s Rock Streaming Songs chart in 2014 and charting around the world: it is certified 10x platinum in Norway, 6x platinum in Canada, 3x platinum in Sweden, 2x platinum in Australia and New Zealand, platinum in Switzerland, gold in Austria, Germany and the UK. Following the success of “Sail,” the band would go on to chart two more alternative singles, “Not Your Fault” and “Kill Your Heroes,” having sold over a million downloads combined. In 2014 AWOLNATION remained prominent on numerous Billboard Year End charts closing out the year on Rock Streaming Songs Artists #4, Rock Digital Songs Artists #10, Hot Rock Songs Artists #14, Top Rock Artists #17, Independent Albums #40, and several more. Since the release of their debut album, AWOLNATION has performed countless shows to millions of fans across the globe, including Coachella, Voodoo Festival, Austin City Limits, Osheaga, Brazil’s Mix FM Fest and Austria’s Frequency Festival.

The song is is classic Texas – beautiful soulful pop with a stunning melody built around Sharleen’s powerful and evocative vocal.  ‘Start A Family’ will come with a cinematic video starring longtime Texas fan Alan Rickman, who memorably danced the tango with Sharleen in the video for ‘In Demand’ back in 2000. 'It was incredible to be able to reflect on our body of work after 25 years and rework the tracks in a way that somehow is the very essence of what we've always been about, soul music.' says Sharleen.

HOT! Toya Delazy releases ‘My City’ ft Cassper Nyovest

Toya Delazy starts 2015 with a bang as the SAMA award winning artist launches the video & radio version of ‘My City’ ft Cassper Nyovest - the 2nd single off her sophomore album ‘Ascension’. Toya explains: "My City is a song that celebrates where we are from, those places that brought us up to be who we are today. I decided to collaborate with Cassper Nyovest as he is also very proud of where he is from and how he got to where he is now." Nearly four years in the making Toya began writing ‘My City’ in Durban in 2011, when things “were starting to happen in my career… I felt so grateful to have stepped outside my comfort zone and moved to the "big city". That's where it all started, I will never forget that," said the artist. Kyle Lewis from Dirty Soul Productions, who shot Toya’s acclaimed “Forbidden Fruit” video – nominated recently at the Out Awards London - was the director & vision behind the playful treatment that was done almost entirely against a green screen backdrop. After walking away with three South African Music Awards in 2013 for her gold selling debut album Due Drop and a 2013 BET Nomination for Best International Act (Africa), Toya Delazy announced the release of her brand new album ‘Ascension’. Ascension is characterised by a crystal clear artistic vision and was formed through Toya’s unique writing process & significant production collaborations, both local & international. Craig Massiv & Troydon Murisan, Shane Cooper, Ross Jack & Toya herself formed the heart of the production team, with US based Fresco Kane & Jazziel Sommers adding an international flavour to the collab credits. The anthemic ‘My City’ is the key artistic collaboration (with Cassper Nyovest) from the album ‘Ascension’ released in October 2014.

The Curious Incident (UK) new EP release: Penny Lonesome

UK based alternative pop band The Curious Incident toured SA in November and December 2014 to promote their new EP “Penny Lonesome”.  The band`s vocalist Cavey Roberts says: "The tour was an absolute blast! We overcame loadshedding, wildlife on the highways and e-tolls to meet some of our favourite people in the world at our gigs. We played by candlelight, we played under electric lights, and have fallen head over heels for SA. We hope that our love be reciprocated!"

The official iTunes release date for the EP is 26 January 2015. Pre orders are now open: http://bit.ly/PennyLonesomeSA

The EP consists of 4 news songs: The first single Money hit the SA radio waves in October last year: Tongue-in-cheek teasing of the lyrics of some of the band`s favourite modern artists Aloe Blacc and Sam Smith. The Hunt: An eclectic and somewhat unexpected style mash with a positive blow-out chorus best suited to a Caribbean jump around; Diane: A Tale of youthful love in a school-time crush that's bloomed into an Elvis-approved marriage; Please Don't Say: Perfect for telling that special someone (lover, friend, politician) to shut the hell up.

Willow Smith's "Interdimensional Tesseract" EP

Willow Smith is all grown up. No any catchy Whip My Hair to find on "Interdimensional Tesseract" EP. Instead, it's something more spiritual. But what does the title of the EP means? I have NO idea, but here is what Willow says, “Healing human light bodies with vibrational melody within the chaos of society. – Just for ambient vibes – Oe Ngati Kameie to our fellow Indigos. Virä atan nd tam tam". The songs are interesting to say the least. Track 1 and 2 are like a Buddhist on a LSD trip. It's actually good and nice to hear Willow break away from the conformity of what defines pop music. She sounds like a young Rihanna on some of the tracks. Track 3, See U Dance is a funky tune that is sure to have your head bopping and your foot tapping. So, congrats Willow, you sure know how surprise us so early in 2015!

2015 is FRANCOIS VAN COKE’s Year

Photographer: Hayden Phipps
The countdown begins. We have eight weeks to go to until one of the most anticipated South African music releases of 2015.  Francois van Coke will release his debut solo album in the beginning of April. “I think it’s definitely different from Van Coke Kartel and Fokofpolisiekar. I wanted to do something that is true to myself, very personal and not be restricted to a certain style of music.” Francois teamed-up with old and new friends to bring this album into being. They are Jedd Kossew, Karen Zoid, Laudo Liebenberg, Hunter Kennedy and Arno Carstens.  The album will be released by Supra Familias and will be launched at KKNK in Oudtshoorn, followed by a national tour. His first single, Moontlik Nooit, will be released from his website as a free download on February 20th.  Francois teamed up with Permanent Record to release a limited edition 7” vinyl with this single and an exclusive B-Side that will be released on the same day. The single, Moontlik Nooit, shows Francois' growth and maturity as a writer and musician. This song further cements his place as the leader of the South African rock 'n roll royal family. The B-side of the single is a vinyl exclusive acoustic track called Skree. The acoustic version of the Skree was specifically recorded for the 7" vinyl and will be found on this release only.

Industrial Metal Godfathers Ministry live in South Africa

Industrial Metal Godfathers Ministry are set to tear the faces off Johannesburg on 4 March 2015. The band are playing a once-off show as part of their current world tour at Carfax in Newtown Johannesburg and will be supported by South Africa’s very own Terminatryx and The Slash Dogs. With a pioneering history spanning over 30 years the band was formed in 1981 by lead singer Al Jourgensen, originally as a new wave synthpop outfit. They subsequently changed their style to industrial metal in the late 80s. Ministry found mainstream success in the early 1990s with their most successful album Psalm 69: The Way to Succeed and the Way to Suck Eggs (1992) and touring as part of the Lollapalooza festival. After 27 years of performing, Jourgensen decided to end the band in 2008, claiming a reunion would never happen. However, in August 2011, a reunion was announced when Ministry confirmed they would play one of their first shows in four years at the Wacken Open Air Festival in August 2012. Ministry released a new album titled Relapse in March 2012, that was followed by a world tour. Following the death of long time guitarist Mike Scaccia, Ministry released their last album From Beer to Eternity in September 2013. THE PRODIGY IS BACK! New CD ‘The Day Is My Enemy’

The city at night talks through drones and chaos. The hidden city that lives in the shadows of the anaesthetized and over-stylized urban landscape. The night time heart that pounds to the rush of different drums: a subverted militaristic snare, a distorted break, a glitched dub attack, a middle eastern refrain, a cacophony of in-car dissonance, a symphony of random noise soundtracking life at the edge of the night. Where humanity lurks in darkened corners, hoods up, eyes down and communicating through clandestine gestures. Where the urban fox hunts in the darkness of the city’s suffocating ghost life, ransacking the daytime waste, taking what it wants - unafraid, unchallenged, untethered, untouchable… Like The Prodigy. The Prodigy today announce their new album ‘The Day is My Enemy’, due for release on March 30th via the bands own label Take Me To The Hospital through Cooking Vinyl. It’s an album that takes you on a journey through the unchartered underbelly of urban nightlife where anger is an ever-present energy lurking just beneath the surface of an edgy calm. “I can’t tell you why this record came out so angry, I think it’s just inbuilt in me, ” says Liam Howlett “It’s more about what I like music to do. I’ve always seen music I like as a form of attack. That’s what I use music for, it’s an attack. I didn’t plan this album to sound violent, it’s just the sound that came out of the studio, a kind of build up over the last 4 years. ‘Anger is an energy’, that’s a lyric which always resonated with me. The tension is buried deep in the music right from the first drop. It’s all about the sound having that sense of danger. That’s what The Prodigy sound is about.” Uncompromising first single ‘Nasty’ fires out of the cannons like a ferocious statement of intent and finds Keith Flint at his snarling best. Premiering as Zane Lowe’s Hottest Record in the World tonight on BBC Radio 1, it sets the tone perfectly for the new album. By rights Liam Howlett, Keith Flint and Maxim shouldn’t be angry at all. The Prodigy have always cut a solitary path through the noise-scapes of electronic dance music. They’ve dropped five epoch defining studio albums, including 2009’s world dominating Invaders Must Die, and delivered unforgettable live performances that have taken electronic beats into unchartered territories. Throughout this time they’ve remained resolutely focused on their own vision, inspiring legions of artists along the way. The Day Is My Enemy is probably the most British sounding album you’ll hear this year. Not British in the flag waving jingoistic sense, but in a way that understands that the night time spaces of urban Britain are a multi-hued cacophony of cultures. If Invaders Must Die was the sound of the rusted urban sprawl decaying like an open wound in the British countryside, then The Day is My Enemy is about the angry humanity existing in the decay of the urban nightmare.

Top 5 albums for 2015

Ah, the smell of the new year. Fresh, crisp with dollops of new music on the way. And of course at The Beat headquarters, there is nothing that says Happy New Year than new music....

Madonna - Rebel Heart
Her Madgesty's 13th studio album is going to be a hot commodity. With 6 songs already officially released (after 13 non completed songs were leaked last year), Rebel Heart is gearing up to be a dance-banger. The CD features A-list producers including Diplo, Avicii, Kanye West, Ryan Tedder, and more.

Radiohead - Title To Be Announced
If rumours are true, rockers Radiohead are gearing up for their 1st release since their 2011 CD, King Of Limbs. Back in 2014 guitarist Jonny Greenwood spilled the beans on the new recording sessions, “We’re going to start up in September, playing, rehearsing and recording and see how it’s sounding.”

Adele - Title To Be Announced
Ok, we're HOPING Adele will grace us with a new CD this year. It's about time! Her last CD, 21, was released in 2011. Adele, we miss you! collaborator Ryan Tedder has dropped snippets on the CD, "I know that with the amount of insanely good songs she has to pick from - 'cause I've heard most of 'em - this album's gonna be crazy."

Coldplay - A Head Full of Dreams
I wasn't impress with Ghost Stories. Seriously. It was depressing. I wanted to slit my wrists. So here's hoping Chris and the boys will bring is something we can wiggle our toes to. Oh, and the downside? Rumoured it could be their "final album". Sad.

Muse - Title To Be Announced
Matt Bellamy and his band has dabbled in some experimentation on their last album, but don't expect any of that on album number 7. Oh no. Matt said that the CD might be a bit more raw and a bit more rock. After all, they are working with Robert 'Mutt' Lange (AC/DC, Def Leppard, Maroon 5)...
