Fokofpolisiekar - Ready to Rumble in 2013

Francois van Coke from Fokofpolisiekar
A decade ago in March 2003 the legendary 5-piece rock outfit Fokofpolisiekar, originally from Bellville, penned down cult classics like Hemel op die Platteland  and Fokofpolisiekar. Fokofpolisiekar changed the face of the local music scene with their first musical offering, As jy met Vuur speel sal jy Brand, released by the end of 2003, and their massive impact still burns strongly ten years later. Fokofpolisiekar ended 2012 with a riveting sold-out tour and the release of a double album.  The band is back by popular demand and ready to treat their old and new fans to the En Nou’s dit 10 Jaar Later (And Now It’s 10 Years Later) Tour. The name of the tour is a play on the lyrics of their hit Fokofpolisiekar. The band will once again be performing two sets, an acoustic set followed by a full-on rock set. The show duration is 120 minuntes and can’t be missed. In April 2013 Fokofpolisiekar will also return to London to play two shows at the Clapham Grand in Clapham Junction. There is talk to start production in the long awaited third full length album in March 2013. No deadline or release date has been set. Catch the band on 27 February at Rio Casino, Klerksdorp; 28 February at the Barnyard Theatre, Cresta; 1 March Firkin Pub, Centurion; 6 March Neetlinghof, Stellenbosch; 16 March Emperors Palace, Kempton Park; 21 March The Barnyard Theatre, Parkview; 22 March Standard Bank Arena, Johannesburg and 28 March The Assembly, Cape Town.

It's with great excitement and anticipation that I look forward to headlining my own show in this venue some 23 years later." On his return to South Africa, Johnny, who is known in France as Le Zoulou Blanc (The White Zulu), will be performing on 7 April at The Kirstenbosch Gardens, Cape Town. Elvis Se Seun - Die legende leef voort!

Elvis is weliswaar dood, maar die gerugte oor sy misterieuse seun wat sy pa se kenmerkende stem en opwindende dansbewegings geërf het, wil maar net nie gaan lê nie . . . .
Wie is Elvis se seun?
Laaste een, has Elvis ever left the building? Miskien, maar die legende leef voort in Elvis se Seun.

Jazz legend Victor Ntoni dies

Victor Ntoni
It's a sad day for local jazz music with the untimely death of jazz legend Victor Ntoni yesterday. According to reports, he died from a heart attack in Helen Joseph Hospital in Johannesburg. Victor was 65. The Star newspaper reports that his wife Linda Ntoni, said Victor was admitted to hospital on Thursday with a persistent cough. “It was found that he had fluid in his lungs,” she said. He stayed on in hospital for further observation and tests. He collapsed yesterday morning. “They tried to resuscitate him for 45 minutes, but he had had a heart attack, most probably aggravated from the condition,” said Linda. Victor, a self-taught bassist, joined the Dollar Brand Trio as a teenager. The trio included world famous Cape Town pianist Abdullah Ibrahim.

Skrillex! Venue change for Cape Town

Sonny John Moore AKA Skrillex
The Cape Town venue for the first ever Skrillex tour of South Africa has just been changed to the Ostrich Farm following the massive success of Swedish House Mafia at the same venue. The reason for the change is that the capacity at Thunder City had been restricted and we didn’t want to run the risk of letting down any Skrillex fans. The final show dates and venues are Friday 1 March at the Ostrich Farm in Cape Town; Saturday 2 March at H2O, Wild Waters in Johannesburg; and Sunday 3 March at the Wavehouse in Durban. Tickets will be available from Computicket as of Wednesday, 30 January.

The Only Love Songs Album You'll Ever Need

With Valentine's Day lurking around the corner (14 February for those who forgot...), this compilation is perfect to set the mood. And yes, I confess, I'm not immune to Valentine's Day. Even I can get soppy. . .  The Only Love Songs Album You'll Ever Need is 3 CD set full to the brim of classic love songs spanning the last five decades. CD REVIEW! 2013 Grammy Nominees

The 19th edition of the Grammy Awards nominees CD is actually one of the few that stands out. The previous CDs in the collection featured bland and uncreative songs with only a few highlights here and there. But the 2013 CD give pop connoisseurs one-stop shopping for songs from 22 of this year’s highest-profile nominees. Artists featured on the collection are Adele, Alabama Shakes, the Black Keys, Kelly Clarkson, Coldplay, Florence & The Machine, Fun. featuring Janelle Monáe, Gotye, Hunter Hayes, Carly Rae Jepsen, the Lumineers, Maroon 5 featuring Wiz Khalifa, Miguel, Mumford & Sons, Muse, Frank Ocean, Katy Perry, Pink, Ed Sheeran, Bruce Springsteen, Taylor Swift, and Jack White. The CD is a treasure chest of cool songs, and for me Mumford & Sons, Black Keys, Muse and P!nk are the top performers on this CD. PS – South African viewers can watch the 2013 Grammy Awards live on Channel O on DStv (channel 320) at 03:00 on Monday 11 February 2013.

NEW! Goldfish returns with a hot tune & new CD

South African live electronic duo Goldfish are back with a bang in 2013 with a brand new single: Take Back Tomorrow. The Fishies, Dom and Dave have been hard at work on their hotly anticipated new album Three Second Memory, out later this year. “Take Back Tomorrow” features driving basslines, thumping kicks and a rockier sound. ‘The track developed off an uplifting piano chord progression that Dom spontaneously played in the studio one morning and we had the whole song written by the end of the day’ Says Dave. “Sometimes a good track pops out in a couple of hours and sometimes it takes weeks or months to come out of the shadows of our imagination - but this one just wrote itself… We’re really excited about this track and we’ve been playing it out live with massive response, it’s huge!” Goldfish are tipped to be an act to watch in 2013, with a brand new album, remixes and a world tour including UK, USA, Brazil, and Europe. Depeche Mode's Delta Machine!

Finally, after a long wait, it was announced that Depeche Mode's new CD will be titled Delta Machine, and will be released 26 March. The group will also debut their new single and video, Heaven, next week Friday, 1 February. Main somg writer for the legendary band, Martin Gore said of the release, “Writing this album was incredibly daunting as I wanted the sound of this collection to be very modern. I want people to feel good about listening to this record, to get some kind of peace. It’s just got something magical about it.” Bum-wiggling lead singer Dave Gahan added, “With this release we’ve completely shifted our idea of how to create an album. When we hit a wall where we realize the album is beginning to sound too normal, we’ll mess it up and really give it that organic Depeche Mode Sound. Delta Machine is no different, and I can’t wait for all of our fans to hear it.

Lilly Million - a million dollar lady

Lilly Million
The debut release by 23 year old, Lilly Million is finally here!! It’s been two years in the making, but the album “Lilly Million on… Truth, Love and Freedom” has finally arrived. The singles Frontlines and Better Things gave Lilly the opportunity to dip her feet in the music industry water piquing the interest of audiences and the industry in general, and now the full-length album is out. The bohemian folk singer caught the attention of record exec’s in 2010 at an impromptu performance in Melville. The label, Electromode, were intrigued by Lilly’s off-the-wall presence and unique voice. There was certainly no other young black female in this country performing folk music, and if so, certainly not with this level of passion, distinctive vocal delivery and lyrical poetry! After a year-long development deal, hours working on new material with several established producers, a deal was signed in 2011. Within a few months of the first single being on air, Lilly Million has already performed at both the White Mountain Folk and Oppikoppi festivals in 2012, and has been working the live circuit in Gauteng with her 4 piece band. The album is a fusion of her love of organic folk and powerful pop, lyrically questioning  truth, politics, current affairs, freedom and of course, love.

LIVE! Beyonce's halftime Super Bowl show

Ms Knowles-Carter at the 2013 inauguration
ESPN, the worldwide leader in sports, with non-stop international sports action, on DStv channel 230, will be the television home of one of the world’s biggest sporting events as it broadcasts live coverage of Super Bowl XLVII from New Orleans, where the San Francisco 49ers will take on the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday 3 February. We in South Africa will see it live on Monday 4 February at 01:00 the morning. This will mean that South African fans of Destiny's Child and Beyoncé will also see the diva perform at the big halftime show of the event. Rumours are rife that her fellow Destiny's Child ladies might join her on stage at the spectacular event. For her upcoming Super Bowl halftime show performance, Beyoncé dishes to GQ magazine, “One of the reasons I connect to the Super Bowl is that I approach my shows like an athlete, "adding, "You know how they sit down and watch whoever they're going to play and study themselves? That's how I treat this.” Let's just home Mr Knowles-Carter won't lip-sync through the performance as she's rumoured to have done with the recent President Obama's inauguration. But then on the other hand, Madonna lip-synched her way through her 2012 Super Bowl half-time performance last year, as did the late Whitney Houston in her 1991 Super Bowl rendition of the national anthem. . .

Josh Groban for CSI: NY

Crooner Josh Groban has booked a guest role on CSI:NY, reports Digital Spy. The performer will appear in a special Valentine's Day episode (in America) of the show as himself, and not that of a corpse. . . Chris Chameleon's Droomland

Chris Chameleon never ceases to amaze with his innovative and interesting musical offerings. His latest release “Droomland” (DVD and CD) features the Drakensberg Boys Choir and was recorded in the theatre of the Sudwala Caves in Mpumalanga. Fourty five of the choir`s top students joined forces with the magnetic Chris Chameleon and the sold out show titled “In Dreams” inspired the title of the CD and DVD “Droomland.” This latest offering takes you on a journey of exquisite aural and visual magnificence.  Bringing these two incredible musical forces together is a rare and special thing. The caves form a beautiful and unique backdrop and the production is of the highest quality.  “Droomland” is simply an extraordinary must have for any music lover`s collection. Chris Chameleon was excited about performing with the “Drakies” and said it was a childhood dream of his to be part of this special boys choir of heavenly voices. “As a child it was always a dream of mine to be in the Drakies, but due to my mom’s circumstances  I could not join.” Chameleon said. Apart from the well-known classical songs that they performed together, Chris also motivated the Drakensberg Boys Choir to collaborate on the track “Chamion”,  from his monki- punk Boo! days, which resulted in fun and humorous “choirpunk.”

Adele Vs. Dido: battle of the British divas

While British singer Adele conquered the world with her music the last couple of years, it now seems the other British singer Dido is back to reclaim her crown as the queen of globe-conquering soulful pop. The independent.co.uk reports that the "White Flag" singer, who sold 33 million albums during a decade of chart dominance, will return with a new album, Girl Who Got Away, after five years out of the spotlight. The CD will be out on 4 March. The Kensington-born singer, 41, attended English classes in California and took time off to start a family. She has collaborated with producer Brian Eno on the new album. Dido’s first two albums No Angel and Life For Rent remain two of the UK’s biggest sellers of all-time. Adele, who has now sold 32 million albums, is creeping up on Dido’s career sales. Dido said: “It was an incredibly fun record to make. There was no pressure on me at all. And now I just can't wait for people to hear it.” The singer has unveiled a single "Let Us Move On", featuring rising US rap star Kendrick Lamar, which will hit airwaves on 24 February.

Linkin Park's favourite pranks

Mike Shinoda
Fans expect rock stars to live like rock stars and behave like rock stars. With that meaning, getting drunk, groupies, girls, throwing stuff from hotel rooms - the list is endless. So it comes as no surprise when Linkin Park's Mike Shinoda told Kerrang! magazine of some of the 'pranks' the band gets up to when touring. "There was a time when my band and crew - but particularly the crew - had a favourite prank. In the middle of the night they'd remove all the furniture from somebody's room and do one of two things with it," he explained. "They'd either put it all in the elevator, so when the doors opened literally everything would be in there, like something out of a cartoon. Or they would wait until one of the guys in the crew got drunk enough, remove all the furniture, and set it up outside the hotel in the exact same positions. They'd move the guy as well, so when he woke up all his furniture was in the same place but there were no walls, and he'd be looking around, wondering what the hell was going on." Mike has also been guilty of partying a little too hard when away with the band. He recalled an incident when he managed to lose all the other guys after one too many drinks. "I managed to lose my entire band in Tokyo once," he laughed. "We were in this club where they served beer in these tiny little cups and you couldn't keep track of how much you were drinking... I sat down on the kerb, and the next thing I know I'm waking up again at 4am on my own in the back streets of Tokyo."

Chaos! Van Coke Kartel featuring Jack Parow

If famed (weirdo) American film maker David Lynch, industrial rockers Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor and Quentin Tarantino should ever collaborate on a music video, Chaos should be the result. But this epic video of the second last single of Van Coke Kartel's CD Wie's Bang was produced by local boytjie Ben Jay Crossman. He says about the video, "MK approached me to create a visual feast for this great track so I jumped at the opportunity. I wanted to create a video dealing with the drama of the end of the world as we know it. VCK and Jack Parow were super to work with and gave me complete creative freedom to materialize the song. I built the sets and had all the pieces of the jigsaw ready to go, then shot as much as time would allow. Our enthusiastic editor Cremer van Dango pushed himself to the limit and helped put this work of art together. With such a brilliant team namely Robo Wilson our DOP and Wilma Smit our producer we were able to create this video on a tiny budget with epic results. Thanx to my team and the band for all making me look so good." The video is EPIC and a must see. Watch it HERE!

Stefan Ludik’s addiction to beats, life and music

Fans of the Afrikaans soap Binneland knows Stefan Ludik as the character Gustaf Kemp. Stefan became a house hold name as the boytjie from Namibia in Big Brother Africa in 2003 and soon afterwards landed a role in the soap, Egoli as straight-talking legal eagle Werner Kranz.  But Stefan is much more than an actor, he is also a bloody damn good and brilliant musician! The Beat caught up with Stefan to chat about music, media, and what pisses him off.
Stefan Ludik
Hey Stefan, how you doing? All good and ready for this new year!
I really like your song Disappear/Suzuki Swift Song. So give us the inside scoop - where did the idea of the song come from? Thanks! I wrote this song with Namibia in mind and also my main sponsor Suzuki Auto Namibia. There are some never-ending and beautiful roads in Namibia I've driven with my Suzuki cars. I especially pictured the road along the coast of Namibia where you get the Namib dunes on one side and the ocean on the other.
It has a very catchy club vibe to it - is club style something you can relate to? Definitely! I love working with and listening to a whole lot of different styles and genres.
Is this any indication what fans can expect from your new material? Yes, an experiment and mix-up a few different styles in my music. From Hip Hop to Rock to Dubstep and Dance.
Talking about new stuff, when will you release a new CD? My time is very limited this year. I do acting full time now and music on weekends so I don't have time to work on a full album now. I just finish a few singles in my spare-time.
Your new songs, how much involved are you with creating new tracks? I write and compose everything myself. I do pre-production at my little home studio and then go and pimp it out at a professional studio with the right gear and equipment.
If possible, what direction will your new music have and is there any specific reason for this? I try and incorporate influences and sounds from where I come from, Namibia and also incorporate what I hear and see on tv internationally. My dream is to travel with my music and connect and relate to people from all walks of life. On my Facebook music page I have quite a lot of people from countries outside Africa who enjoy my music so I want to give them what they like with a Ludik twist.
What music appeals to you? I grew up with good old rock and roll. Queen, Elvis, Roy Orbison, Led Zeppelin, Nazareth, Moody Blues and so on. In essence I'm a die-hard rock and roller, but I love music and how it's produced. So I can appreciate and listen to any style of music.
Any surprises fans can expect to hear? I did some cool collaborations on a few songs with Gazza who is a big Namibian Kwaito artist and Gal Level, an award winning girl group also from Namibia. The songs we did is a mixture of urban and Hip Pop R&B. It's quite unique sounding with my Rock vocals and their R&B style singing. Another surprise is that I also rap on a few songs. Check out Black Girl, White Boy, Kick it up a gear, Keep it real and Thug Life.
Besides music, what else have you been up to? Acting, business and charity work with my Stefan Ludik Youth Fund, where we try and support Namibian children in need. I'm also the ambassador for a new endurance race called The Warrior Race. (http://www.facebook.com/thewarriorrace?fref=ts)
Any TV shows and/or movies in the works? Unfortunately I can’t play on any other series or movie other than Binnlenad at the moment.
On a personal level, you communicate quite often with your fans on Facebook, but how do feel about media intrusion into your personal life? I don't involve media and public in my personal life.
What would you allow to get published/aired and what would just piss you off? My music, work and TV work is relevant, but relationship news and preferences are irrelevant. If that gets published without my permission that would piss me off :)
What has been the most outrageous story you've ever heard or read about yourself? There's been quite a few.. I've been married on two occasions and that I've been arrested. In both cases the public couldn't separate me in the "real life" from TV characters and story lines I've played.
2013 is still in its infant shoes, but what are your 5 main goals for the year? Happiness, health, love, music and money.
What's your motto you live by? What you give in life, you get back.

CD REVIEW! Josh Groban - All That Echoes

With his sixth album, All That Echoes, crooner Josh Groban has at once built on the touchstone artistry that has made him a global pop star for more than a decade and expanded his ambitious reach into richly rewarding new territory. And Grobanites (fans of Josh, as they're called) will be pleasantly surprised with this CD. The inspiring first single “Brave” shows off his accomplished, personal song writing as one of seven songs on the album he co-wrote. Most of what’s on the album was from the first few takes of each song, with the spontaneous spirit intact. Even the full orchestra parts, added later, expanded directly from the music created by the three strings players in the initial sessions. And the vibe extended outside the studio. “It’s a musical camaraderie, not just showing up for a gig,” Josh explains. Groban was inspired to push himself as a writer, expanding on the achievements on Illuminations, the first album to be centred on his own compositions. “Brave” saw him team with long-time collaborator Tawgs Salter and singer-songwriter Chantal Kreviazuk.

Lady GaGa's wardrobe malfunction

Lady Gaga's oops! Credit: www.filmyfair.com
It's not only Janet Jackson and Madonna that have wardrobe malfunctions on stage, it can happen to anyone, even Lady Gaga! The Born This Way Singe's trousers split while she was performing on stage last week. The singer suffered a wardrobe malfunction when her black latex pants tore during a concert at the Rogers Arena in Vancouver, Canada on Friday. During a performance of her track 'Heavy Metal Lover', she jumped onto a motorcycle, causing her Versace fashion item to split and expose her bottom. Nevertheless, she kept on performing as if the incident hadn't occurred. Digital Spy reports that the 26-year-old singer has also been in the news recently for her on-going feud with Kelly Osbourne and Sharon Osbourne. Sharon called GaGa a bully after the singer posted an open letter to Kelly on her LittleMonsters.com blog. GaGa said that Kelly's show Fashion Police is "rooted in criticism, judgement, and rating people's beauty against one another".

CD REVIEW! T.I. - Trouble Man: Heavy is the Head

Global superstar T.I. has released his eighth solo studio LP Trouble Man: Heavy is the Head and the iconic MC says although he will always be honest when talking about his mistakes as well as triumphs, he’s done apologising.“Pretty much every aspect of my life is public knowledge, my best times, my worst times and everything in between, Tip offered. “It’s important for me to let people know that yeah, I do talk about colliding with some pitfalls on this album; it’s not going to be a mournful project. I think a mistake I made with my last album No Mercy is apologizing to people who didn’t necessarily care about or care for me in the first place. The people who really love me and my true fans never turned their back on me.” For the album title, Tip drew inspiration for the project from his own life as well as one of his favourite artists. “There isn’t anybody that is familiar with Marvin Gaye, who doesn’t love his music,” Tip began explaining about the titling of his album. “I’ve been a tremendous fan of his since I was first introduced to his genius work as a child. His entire catalogue is stellar, but that Trouble Man Soundtrack was always one that stuck out to me. I listened to the title track a lot when I was recording this album and thinking of a name. I kept saying that the lyrics in Marvin’s record apply so eloquently to my life. I was truly inspired by it.”

Justin Timberlake teams up with Jay-Z for new track

I was expecting an upbeat kind of song for Justin Timberlake's return to music, but instead his new song Suits & Ties is a mid-tempo track that doesn't disappoint. As JT wrote on his web site: "I hope this gets to you the right way. It's the only way I know to do it. Some people may criticize me for the last 3 days. But it was fun, right?? Right?!?! Besides, I'd rather speak directly to all of you. And, who can knock me for having a little bit of fun with it? Well... No more teasing. Although, it was A LOT of fun. (Did I mention that I'm having fun with this?? Ha!) So, here goes: This year is an exciting one for me. As you probably have heard through the "grapevine," I'm gearing up for a big 2013. Back in June of last year, I quietly started working on what is now, my next journey with that thing I love called MUSIC. The inspiration for this really came out of the blue and to be honest, I didn't expect anything out of it. I just went into the studio and started playing around with some sounds and songs. It was probably the best time I've had in my career... Just creating with no rules and/or end goal in mind and really enjoying the process. What I came up with is something I couldn't be more excited about! It is full of inspiration that I grew up listening to and some newfound muses that I've discovered along the way. I'm calling it "The 20/20 Experience," and it's coming out this year. I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed making it. That's all I'm giving you for now... I know, I know! Again, with the teasing!!! Get ready. This is going to be fun (well, at least it is for me)." Listen to the song, HERE!

Willow Smith's awesome, yet, sad new song

Willow Smith
Everyone gets the blues and when a music star gets the blues, you can expect great songs. But the 12-year-old Willow Smith singing an awesome, yet, sad song? True! I wasn't expecting to hear the voice behind "Whip My Hair" belt them out for at least a couple more years. So when I queued up Willow Smith's new single, "Sugar and Spice," expecting another jammy jam, and not a weepy ballad tracked to a Radiohead sample. Frankly, I am so impressed and surprised that Smith would use such a downbeat song (specifically, "Codex" from Radiohead's 2011 King Of Limbs) at her young age. The song is vastly different from her biggest hit Whip My Hair from 2010, which tattooed itself into the brains of millions of people around the world with Crazy Frog effectiveness.

The return of British boy band Blue

Oh boy, now this is a surprise. Back in the day, British boy band Blue was the talk of the town with their string of soppy and bouncy  hits ‘All Rise’, ‘If You Come Back’, ‘Fly By’, ‘One Love’, ‘Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word’ (with Sir Elton John), ‘Bubblin’ and ‘Signed Sealed Delivered’ (with Stevie Wonder & Angie Stone). The boys decided to take a break from their hectic schedules in 2005 and pursue solo projects, which included solo albums, stage performances, stints on I’m A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here and Dancing On Ice and much, much more...Now they're back with a brand new CD, "Roulette"- the first new album in 10 years! The CD, which will be released in South Africa on 25 February, features the hit song, Hurt Lovers. Watch the video for the song, HERE! All the best for the band, let's hope they can recapture that Blue magic. . .

Mariah Carey: 'I didn't know Nicki Minaj sang'

Now this is what I call insult to injury. With first episode of American Idol airing in South Africa on Saturday 26 January on M-Net at 18:00, there has already been tension between new judges Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj, and now Mariah has claimed that she didn't know Nicki Minaj was a singer! Digital Spy reports that responding to comments that her fellow American Idol judge had recorded a song about their recent feud, Carey claimed she didn't know Minaj could sing. On the track, titled 'Hell Yeah', Minaj sings: "I'm quick to check a bitch that's out of line/ Why these bums so mad that the queen on Idol?" Mariah told Barbra Walters on ABC News: "I don't know. I don't know what she's singing. I didn't know she sang, I thought she rapped or whatever. "I think [Idol] is a classic, classy show and it didn't need this. I really think it was just a crass moment." She added: "For me, this is ultimately about the kids, the contestants. I've been blessed to live my dream more than half my life so I want to help give that back to someone else." Listen to Nicki's song Hell Yeah!, HERE!
