As SA hip-hop heats up, the movement keeps breeding great talent and BK is it’s stand-out gem, paving her own lane with the release of debut single, Phola! Not only does she have bars, a great voice but also a uniquely smooth cadence last heard on artists like Bahamadia and Doggy Style Snoop Dogg, Bk reps in a style that won’t easily be boxed and labelled as female rap, this one qualifies as just straight up dope hip-hop. According to BK her style is... “a mixture of kasi and street rap I suppose, some say I'm gangster...” My style is influenced by BK is not new to the music scene, she’ recently collaborated with Reason, Tumi of Tumi And The Volume, DJ Shimza (yes she gets down with house music too!) and she gets lots of love with co-signs from DJ Vigilante (Cashtime Life Crew) who took to the artist after he heard her rendition of Anatii’s ‘The Saga’ and Drake x Niki Minaj’s Truffle Butter freestyle. BK also featured in this week’s MTV Base Cypher side Ginger Breadman and Ethikweni’s new kid on the block Raheem Kemet. So, what is this about again? BK’s new single... it doesn’t get cooler than this...“Phola is feel good joint about the thing we do on weekends - just chill... “ BK
MØ – “Kamikaze”
MØ (pronounced ‘moo’) is a name to remember! After featuring on “Lean On” with Major Lazer & “Beg For It” with Iggy Azalea, this young Dane is taking the industry by storm with her new single
“Kamikaze” has already been playlisted nationally in South Africa and is expected to be a monster hit as we head into 2016.
Parson James – “Temple”
South Carolina-born, Brooklyn-based singer and songwriter Parson James likes to call his music “conflicted pop gospel" and his new single “Temple” showcases just that. As an openly gay, bi-racial son of the South, who experienced a rocky childhood, Parson has frequently found himself drawn to trying to make sense of his past and how it has shaped his identity.
Cage The Elephant – “Mess Around”
Have you missed these guys as much as we have? It’s been over two years since they dropped their last album and fans have been hungry for something new “Mess Around” is the first single from their fourth studio album, Tell Me I’m Pretty, now available for pre-order online.
Shy Carter – “Bring It Back” feat. Aleon Craft
A hot new signing from Sony Music Australia that is starting to make waves in the US, Shy Carter is someone to keep an eye on this summer holiday! “Bring It Back” is the focus single at the moment and it will be serviced to radio in South Africa shortly.
Zebra & Giraffe`s new EP “Slow Motion” will be released on Friday 13 November 2015. Zebra & Giraffe is known as one of South Africa`s finest rock acts, with two SAMA wins and more than 15 radio hits over the past 7 years. Their passion to move beyond what they’re known for musically is evident in the unpredictability of each new release. The good news for fans who are curious to hear what Zebra & Giraffe has come up with on this new offering, is that the EP will be available for pre order on iTunes from Friday October 30th. The first single "It's All The Same" will also be available to buy on iTunes (as a single or as an instant grat track when you pre order the EP). The single will also be available for streaming on Apple Music, Deezer, TIDAL, Spotify, Google Play and Rdio. The band did the pre-production for the new album at Openroom in Greenside and then flew to San Francisco to record the EP with American producer Cian Riordan (HOLYCHILD, The Wombats). – This is the first time that they have worked with a new producer after doing 4 albums with Darryl Torr. Greg Carlin says: “Working with a new producer for the first time in our career was really refreshing and a good step for us. We've worked with Darryl (Torr) on 4 albums now and he and the band agreed it was time to try something different. Initially we were nervous working with someone else, but immediately after our first Skype call with Cian, we knew we'd found the right guy. I think the 2 main things he brought to the table was a fresh perspective on song choice, and a simplification of the production process. We're so used to layering our sound in studio - we'd layer at least 5 to 10 guitars plus effects on any given part. That layering has in a sense become our signature sound, but it also allowed us to hide behind it. I think we got away with a lot. Cian stripped everything back to its core and made sure the hooks and the playing were all super strong. It's definitely given us a bolder and punchier sound.” Zebra & Giraffe spent 7 days recording at Panoramic House in Stinson Beach (20mi from San Francisco) Carlin says that the band loved every minute of it. “The studio (Panoramic House) had some of the best vintage gear in, so it was a real treat to be able to record there” They also got to record the vocals and piano for "You Are" live at Barefoot Studios in Hollywood. “We got a really great piano player named Dan Martinez to come in and play live while I sang in the booth. It was a great experience to record in that room - The piano was the same one Stevie Wonder recorded "Songs In The Key Of Life" on and parked just next to it was Slash's cruiser bike that he was given by Conan O'Brien! Very Hollywood.” The EP really isn't focused on one specific type of song or genre. The sound across the 5 songs is diverse. Carlin explains: “On this project we wanted to push ourselves in different directions and not play it safe by producing the same thing we have before.” The searing "Redefine" finds the bands exploring its heavier side with Carlin pushing his voice to new heights. You Are" and "Slow Motion" find Carlin and the band exploring more positive themes than on past releases, whilst "It's All The Same" and "Won't Break Down" blur the barriers between pop and rock and will be stuck in your head for days. “You Are” also features newcomer Ruby Gill on vocals. The EP was mixed by Riordan and mastered by Emily Lazar at the Lodge, NYC (Vampire Weekend, Sia, Foo Fighters)
Exclusive Apple Connect Music Video Release: Monday 2 November:
The music video for "It's All The Same" will be released exclusively on Apple Connect on Monday the 2nd November. The video is a collaboration between director/DOP Trevor Calverly, photographer and Art Director Elsa Bleda and Greg Carlin. It follows a couple's brief "road-trip romance" but reimagined on trains rather than on the road. It stars Elsa and actor Adam Heyns and was filmed on the Shosholoza Meyl train from Johannesburg to Matjiesfontein, on train rides from Cape Town to Fish Hoek, in bars like Lefty's and the Laird's Arms (Matjiesfontein) and in the Two Oceans Aquarium.

Get your head banging with one of Disturbed's best albums. For real. I had my doubts. Hesitant to listen to it (although I like rock & metal), and now it's the only CD I listen to when driving around and at home. The band sure took their time with this CD. It's their 6th CD but their previous CD was released 5 years ago! One thing I can say is that out of the 13 tracks on the CD more than half are possible rock hits. On Immortalized the one thing I quite enjoyed was the rhythm section of Mike Wengren (drums) and John Moyer (bass). And as expected, the CD has hints of electronic and industrial elements. And it works. And it rocks! The Simon & Garfunkel cover of The Sound Of Silence is one of my best tracks. If I could choose another one it would be "Immortalized".

While Tholwana Mohale's song Hollywood Guy is zooming up the music charts, The Beat got a chance to speak to her about how intimidating the music scene can be, her secrets and inspirations.
You are starting very young in the music industry, so how intimidating can the music industry be? It can be very intimidating. There are a lot of good artists out there, and you’re always worrying if you’re song will be as enticing to the public as another person’s song. I particularly felt that pressure ahead of the release of “Hollywood Guy”.
What did you find the most difficult when you started in the industry? Maintaining the balance between school and recording. I’ve also had to adjust to a brand new environment this year, having moved from my hometown to Johannesburg. We take things day by day!
Your single Hollywood Guy is scorching up the playlists. Tell us a bit about the single, what inspired you to write it and how you ended up working with FutureKings? There was a guy at my old school that I had a huge crush on. We were just friends but all my friends were rooting for us to get together. I didn’t tell him or anyone I liked him… I decided to rather express my emotions though my music. I was sitting in my room one evening and the chorus just came to me. I started writing the verses but I didn’t finish the song right there and then. The second half of the song is actually about someone new that I met here in Johannesburg! The track has taught me that sometimes things just don’t work out, but they lead you to better things. “Hollywood Guy” is pretty much about finding that special person in your life. I was set up with Ross & Alex from FutureKings via the label and it was a great experience working with them. I’m currently working on some more material with them and I’m excited to see where the partnership goes.
When did you first become interested in music? Well I’ve always been interested in music, but when I was 11 I started playing guitar and writing songs. It’s been the love of my life since then.
Can you remember the first song you ever sang and the first ever CD you bought? First CD I ever bought: Beyonce – Dangerously in Love, and apperently the first song I sang was Twinkle twinkle little star [Laughs]
Who are your music inspirations? Beyonce, Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift, Jimmy Nevis, Demi Lovato, Sia & ChianoSky.
What do people not know about Tholwana? I’ve done folk dancing before! *laughs* It was compulsory at my previous school and I was never too good at it.
What is next for Tholwana? More studio time, more writing, plus lots of gigs. I just wrapped up a gig in Drakensberg and have a couple more bookings before everyone goes on holiday in December. We’re working towards an EP release early next year and hopefully my debut album will follow from that. Watch this space!
Any advice to those who want to start out in the music industry? Be confident in your craft! If you are, you will succeed. Don’t doubt yourself and go with your gut!

Stories is the second studio album by Swedish DJ Avicii. It will be released on 2 October 2015. Describing the album, Avicii said: "It's going to be a lot more song-oriented“. On 2 March 2015, Avicii performed live at Australia's Future Music Festival. Avicii has been playing out a lot of the tracks on the album in various forms over the past few years, including "City Lights" and "Broken Arrows" his collaboration with Zac Brown Band, which was premiered on Tiësto's Club Life earlier in the summer. Avicii says the album “refines what I didn’t feel was perfect last time. I think there are more layers to the songs than before, and every song has been written on acoustic guitar, so the structure is different.” He also went on to say that since so many records didn’t make the cut for this album, he’ll put those on another album if Stories does well. Avicii does not credit artists who are on the tracks as features, but they are listed in the liner notes.
“Confident” is the fifth studio album of Demi Lovato. Of the Album; Demi says “The sound just evolves into everything that I've been and everything that I want to become." She also said, "I've never been so sure of myself as an artist when it comes down to confidence, but not only personal things, but exactly what I want my sound to be and what I know I'm capable of and this album will give me the opportunity to show people what I can really do.” With her brilliantly provocative banger leading the album, Demi officially kickstarted her new era in a big way. The single hit top 10 on three different South African charts, and still continues to climb up some chart lists. The second single off the album is “Confident”. It's an catchy track that opens with regal trumpets and stomping beats backing Demi's belts about dismissing claims that she's underrated. “Confident” is fast gaining airplay on the chart sand is to sure to follow in the footsteps of the single before it, making her next album an exciting one.
